Trivial yet really bothering me ...

I'm still awake at 4am ... I have a knot in my stomach and all because I've been getting into a pickle trying to work out my gas bill. I've been putting in regular meter readings online but am still getting into a real kerfuffle . Several times I've googled 'how to convert metric gas units to kWh' ... I thought I'd finally cracked the calculation but no, it was just an illusion. I feel like I'm in the damned twilight zone. I'm not normally this inept. (although I am a self-confessed scatterbrain). In the last couple of days I've used 14 metric units .... I just need to know how much that will be.

I thought it was

14 x
volume correction factor of 1.022640

x 39.2
calorific value

/ 3.6
kWh conversion factor

once it worked out to 7.something which I thought was right but then I couldn't get it to that again. ARRGGGHHHHHHH

Are you sure you have metric ( cubic meter) rather than imperial( cubic feet) gas meter?

I can see that your calculation seems correct but I can also see a warning that you need to check your last bill for the correct calorific value of gas, which may differ from the one they use in the example. Did you check this?

Thanks Pavlos, Yes I have the Metric meter .. That is the website i used, so it looks like I'm doing it properly. How do I read the number on the bottom line.. how does that convert into Pounds and pence?
BTW, it's just one of the things that's bugging my tonight.

oh hang on.. i need to multiply that by the pence / kwh.... which is about 5p.... that's the bit I'd forgotten...
at least I THINK! that's what I need to do...

I have never even seen a UK gas bill so I am probably not the best person to ask.

I would assume that if it's anything like our electricity bill then once you get to the kWh consumed you then need to multiply by the price per kwh to get to the amount billed before Vat and add vat on top of that. It is possible that price per kwh may vary on sliding scale depending on consumption i.e. First x kwh charged at y pounds per kWh, next z kWh charged at y+1 pounds etc.

I hope I did not confuse you further and that someone from the UK will come along to explain better soon.

Now get yourself some sleep. Have so me hot milk or something.

We are two hours ahead of you here in Cyprus and I have to get up for an eight o'clock game of tennis! The things we do to keep those sugar levels down!

thank you Pavlos. Now I understand where I was going wrong.. i was getting all in a bother because I'd have a massive gas bill and it shocked me.

That's very good of you to do your exercise. I need to follow your example. I have the racquet .. lol
