Trying to lower bloods

Hi my name is Sarah and I was diagnosed with type 2, 5 years ago. I have declined medication all this time as said i would lower my sugars on my own, but as you can imagine, this has not happened. I have now started metformin as my morning bloods were 12-13 and hbsc1 has now reached 70 !!! my own fault. My first week I was 1 tablet per day and my bloods went down to 8-9, the second week i was taking 2 tablets and my food intake is really good, no carbs (or very little) , all fresh cooked foods. third week 3 tablets but my bloods are still the same. MY QUESTION - i am obviously expecting my bloods to be normal in this short time, am i expecting too much, does this take time ????
 
Some people manage to reduce their BG very quickly and others - like me - took quite a while.

The best thing I can suggest is for you to get yourself a meter (if you haven't got one already) to find out which foods are pushing your BG up. Test just before a meal and then an hour and two hours after.
 
I didn't find that metformin made that much difference to my blood sugars but low carb diet has.
 

I don't know how much I can help as I'm relatively new. I too was diagnosed some time ago (2 years), I too did not manage to stick to any control (cravings, denial etc) and my Hbac1 went up (from 48 to 54). I have been taking Metformin for just over 2 weeks now (1 tablet 1 week and now up to 2) BUT I am also doing LCHF. I find it has only taken my BG down a couple of points so far but is reasonably steady.

I am testing several times a day 2 hours after meals for example. BG only alters by a point, half a point at a time. I think you just need to keep on and see what happens over a few months. I noticed that my (seemingly) uncontrolable cravings have gone or lessened since starting Metformin (although that could be a bit psychosomatic ) I really believe keeping your carbs low and adding in some fat helps to stay staisfied and keep those levels down.

As I understand it the effect of Metformin builds up over some time - so it could be a couple of months before the full effect is felt/seen.
I totally agree with Ann 1982 the effect of low carb was far more beneficial than the Metformin - I did and still do have to stay very low carb and I still struggle with this but when I manage this I do feel better in myself and my readings stay within the area I am happy with - my issue is life gets in the way - too much on at work and the stress levels go up and this impacts on my sugar levels.
