Hi i have recently been diagnosed with type 1.5 diabetes, and am rather confused as i am unable to find information on this type.
I am currently monitoring my blood sugars for 3 weeks and when i go back to the diabetes clinic i will be placed on insulin, the current monitoring is so they can get the right insulin!?
I am worried as currently my sugar levels are predominately over 7, before dinner they have so far been below 6 but post-pardial the lowest is 11, unless its after breakfast then they are 8.
The doctor mentioned that they are worried the insulin will cause a hypo as my fasting levels are generally under 7, which is worrying as i drive to work in the mornings and worry that a hypo might occur.
any advice gratefully recieved.

You may well still be on the honeymoon period where after your diagnose the pancreas still produces insulin. Have you had a full set of bloods done yet including HB1ac? As they can do a test cant think of the name to show what type you are. Type 1.5 is also known as LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults).

Once you start insulin as long as your testing your levels and eating the right things you will soon get into the hang of it and not get many hypos.

They did a full set of bloods when I was at clinic on Friday, I assume I will find out the results at my next visit when they are likely to put be on insulin

Hi amoeba1705!

I have Type 1.5 (LADA). It is a strange condition as you will be producing some of your own basal insulin (possibly very strong in the early stages), but you will be producing none or very little first phase insulin when you eat - so your BG can be very good fasting levels, but the tiniest amount of carb will send you very high. As you don't know ow well your pancreas is working day-to-day, it can be a bit difficult to judge the insulin requirements. I have found that keeping the carbs very low (under 50g per day) and therefore keeping the insulin requirements very low helps enormoously with control.I split my small basal dose morning and evening these days (although at your stage I was seriously only takig about 2 units basal a day). 3 years on, I'm still only taking 7 units split 3 morning and 4 evening. I then control the BG by carb counting and injecting Apidra with meals. It can be difficult, but I have good control and very few hypos. I also drive to work of a morning and it is fine. You'll probably find that you are very sensitive to carbs and very sensitive to insulin - that's a typical LADA response. You will get the hang of it, so don't worry. there are a number of us on the forum . We tend to use the Type 1 area mostly, because the long-standing Type 1s tend to be able to help us with our problems with insulin! Anyway, ask any questions you want and one of us will be around to answer usually.

Take care

Been quiet for a bit...had different treatments. Started with novomix for 6 months but was hyping, so given novo rapid and levemir..still hypos despite tiny amounts. Have been on the pump for 21/2months and nw have to tral without it as still have frequent hypos or BGs in low 4 which s no use for driving. I have noticed the pattern of the lows being during the day...not after 5. Trial of no insulin is today and tomorrow then to contact my DSN with results. The use of insulin has brought HBa1c from 53 to 43 so it is working..I am obviously still producing insulin. On the pump I was on 0.8 basal and a total basal/bolus of around 5 units so tiny amounts! Will see what the next steps are tomorrow
