type 1 going to start low carb..NOW!

hi all...been reading loads on low carbing...so im starting.....now!
from a post yesterday I found the diet doctor website which looks fab but wondered if anyone has any recommendations of things that you find essential to help me start.
im looking forward to it! fingers crossed and thanks for all the great threads that got me started. x
 
Hopefully a Type 1 will be able to fill you in on things to watch out for with your insulin dosing.

You will probably need to count your protein (or at least give a little extra insulin once you've worked our how much to take for your carbs).

I love puddings so I missed them at first. Therefore I had sugar free jelly and cream so I didn't feel as tho I was missing out.

I also had alternatives to bread such as oopsies (you can find this on the dietdoctor website) and peanut butter bread - google it. This made me feel like I was still having relatively normal meals for lunch.

Hi I'm new to the diet too, I found it really hard at first because I lived on bread and potaotoes and my I missed them!
I filled the fridge with meats and cheese that I could snack on if I got hungry and also lots of salad and sugar free jelly and double cream I'd suggest that you drink more too in case you get headaches.
I tested before and after meals and seeing the low results keeps me on track, its only been 15 days but I feel positive I'll stick at it. I'm also not so hungry now, I used to be constantly hungry!

I found a spoon or 2 of oil fixed the hunger between meals, I used coconut oil as required
 
Eat til you are satisfied. No hunger allowed!

After a few days you will find you are naturally eating less as your appetite calms down without the carb cravings you've been living with all your life.

And remember, if you want to stick to it, you need to enjoy it, so don't go too OTT and deprive yourself.

Two great sources are the people on this forum and Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Diet book. RD is an American T1 and a doctor. His book is all about how to low carb as a diabetic.

With dosing, it will take you a couple of weeks to figure things out as it's not as obvious as injecting for carbs. You need to consider general portion size and the amount of protein. If you need more info, ask away. Once you've done that, excellent control is easy. Since going low carbing my HbA1c has dropped from the mid-7s to the low-5a. I highly recommend it.
 
I need to reread this book! woke up with blood of 5. (went to bed with blood of 6.3) had scrambled egg with ham and a coffee, gave 4 units and couple of hours later was 10....

Sometimes coffee causes terrible spikes. Could be the person, or the coffee. Could be the caffeine, or the chemicals used to decaf it (water decaffeination uses less nasties!), or the milk, or stress levels, or...

Personally, I do better with high quality water decaffed. But then, I am determined to keep drinking coffee (already given up soooo much, surely one teensy little 500ml cup a day...?). And I do really well with bulletproof coffee (black coffee blended with butter and coconut oi)l. Sounds vile. Tastes marvellous. I think the butter slows the digestion or something. Love it. Can you tell?
