"At age 17 he switched to open-wheel racing, including British Formula 3 and the World Series by Renault. Mid-season in 2007, Kimball was diagnosed with diabetes and missed the remainder of the season, but returned in 2008 in the F3 Euroseries. He returned to the States in 2009, racing in the Firestone Indy Lights Series and entering a partnership with his now-sponsor Novo Nordisk, a company dedicated to diabetes care; Kimball and Novo Nordisk moved to the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2011 as part of the Chip Ganassi Racing family, and he became the first driver with Type 1 diabetes to compete in the Indianapolis 500, finishing 13th."

and this weekend....

"Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing (NNCGR) driver Charlie Kimball finished 11th in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway, in Newton, Iowa. The finish came in his 26th career IZOD IndyCar Series start.
"The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team started the 250-lap race from 14th position. They would advance to 12th during the first caution and spent the opening stages of the race battling for position on the 0.875-mile oval. On lap 101, Kimball established himself in 10th and remained there for 11 laps until moving back to 11th. The No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Honda would make its final stop on lap 183 and would rejoin the field 14th. With 42 to go, Kimball worked his way back up to 11th where he would ultimately finish.
