The lower carb I go the better my control. For the first time ever I have stable blood sugars and I feel good... not hungry etc.

However, I have ketones of between 0.5 and 2 ( with normal blood glucose ) , my clinic say to eat more carbs and inject for them to get rid of the ketones which of course lands me back On the blood sugar roller-coaster no matter how I try to tweak my ratios / split doses. I have delayed gastric emptying and IBD too so low carb also helps there!

So, how safe is it to have nutritional ketones in type 1? As long as my blood sugar is OK, i am giving enough insulin and I am not sick I don't see an issue?

What is your experience?

Do I even need to be testing for ketones if my glucose is normal & I feel OK? I admit I do panic to see ketones there, but that is because from a young age we were told Ketones = danger. Is there a level of ketones that is too much in this situation?

Many thanks in advance

From what I have researched and understand, it is ketones + high blood sugar that causes the danger, which is ketoacidosis, and not ketosis which is healthy. I too am type 1 and have found that the only way to stay off the rollercoaster of highs and lows is to low-carb. I suggest the Type 1 Grit, Facebook page, for support on type 1 and low-carb.
