Type 1

Hi harry,

i don't really know anybody with type1 diabetes either, apart from my auntie in law but i dont see her very often so i know how you feel, so you've come to the right place for people to talk to

How are you anyway? what types of insulin do you use?

I have to take Apidra 3 times a day and Lantus Once a day.

Erm im not sure why i have it tbh and neither do the hospital.
I went to my doctors because i wasnt feeling too well and have my blood sugar level done and it was 37.5! , i have it down to about 17 now but some days can be high 30s.

I'm the same but i use novorapid 3 times a day and i split my lantus into two doses one in the morning and one at night.

Type 1 can appear like it comes from nowhere, there's a theory it can be sort of activated by a virus. can also be hereditary, my father had it since he was 13...

Mine wasn't that high when i was diagnosed in january 2009 but i had the syptoms for a long time so when i was tested i think it was around 19 but i hadnt eaten for about 6 hours so could have been worse i guess. I had ketones and was hospitalized for four days.

Sometimes it takes a while for your BG's to return to normal as you get used to things so don't worry too much!

how are you finding injections? and testing your blood? bet you feel like a pin cushion at the minute!!

it's good you found this site, people to talk to and you can ask all the questions under the sun and someone will always take time to try advise and help best they can
 
The injections are fine, got a few bruises but hey il live

I get little bruises sometimes too, especially on the legs...

I tend to stick to the stomach with novorapid and use the legs for lantus.. prefer the stomach though easiest for me

yeah i know where essex is

18 eh.. kinda like me.. got diabetes late, not an easy thing to learn you have, sounds like your taking it pretty well though

I do rugby league to have pretty big legs, cant feel it lol

rugby? i play football sometimes, not as much as i used to, but i don't have huge legs haha!

Yeah there's alot to take in at once! takes time but im sure youll get there!

I was 20 when i was diagnosed, my biological dad had diabetes from the age of 13 but i never really knew him and he died when i was 13 so it's in my family but i was never around him at an age i can remember.

i know a few people with type 2 diabetes, and my auntie in law has type 1 diabetes but she lives in brighton so i only see her once a year, only seen her once since i was diagnosed but we had a massive chat about diabetes which was nice to talk to someone about it who understands, and she's had diabetes since she was 4 years old so she's a diabetes veteran :lol:

I guess i could say i know alot, but with everything im sure you could always know more

i read up alot on diabetes, and not just type 1 either, i find it all quite interesting!

I'm sure as you get older and meet new people you'll eventually meet someone with diabetes too! even if it's not type 1.

but in the meantime at least this place is here so you've got people to talk to

play any other sports apart from rugby?
 
Hey, hope u dnt mind me bein nosey lol. you two got type one reli late, I've had it since I was 6. I have never had a problem with coping with it. But I imagine it would have been such a shock for u. Hope everything works out gd for ya. x
 
Hey Harry,

I was only diagnosed 6 or 7 weeks ago and i've just turned 26. I'm on Novorapid x3 and Levemir x1 a day. No history of it in the family at all and no virus or illness that i knew of recently. Little did I know it's something that can occur so quickly. I don't know any one else with type 1 either. To be honest before I was diagnosed, I just thought of Diabetes as something older people got and knew they needed injections but didn't understand what the injections did. Now 6ish weeks on, my head is ready to explode with information and my stomach is bluey green with bruises. Way more complicated than I ever thought it was. I'm hoping to go on a course within the next few months to help get a better understanding of things. But i've been told by my DNS that usually they don't want people going on courses until they've been diagnosed for 6 months first. I thought that was rather strange as by 6 months in you could have already started bad habits that could have been avoided. Oh well, can only ask and see if they'll put me on one early.

I was just saying to my dsn the other week that all newly diagnosed type 1's should be given the opportunity to go on a carb counting course such as DAFNE, but except that it may be better for patients to get use to the insulin/testing regime before embarking, hence why your dsn has insisted on waiting 6 months.

Yeh I can see why they say it, but i think it should be judged on a case by case basis, as everyone is different and some people will pick things up very quickly and others a bit slower and some people will take a big interest in carb counting etc whereas I'm sure other people don't. For me, 6 months seems like a long time to 'get used' to insulin/testing routine. When i was diagnosed I was told how much insulin to have before each meal. I could see where I wasn't taking enough and where I was taking too much within the first week, so ended up having to ask for the 'OK' to calculate my basal to carbs. I think if it was upto my DNS then she'd let me take an earlier course, but i'll just have to wait until my consultant meeting in August.
