Hi HEG
I've just been diagnosed today, well it's not official until I have my 2nd blood test next week. However, my GP has told me I AM diabetic and she very much doubts the next fasting test will produce a figure of below 6. My first one was 8.1.
Like you, I've ignored what I've been eating and lapsed into bad habits. The advice you've been given is very similar to mine
1. Diet / lose weight
2. Eat healthily avoiding sugar, high fat
I was told I'd be contacted by the Diabetic Nurse once I've had the 2nd blood test and she doesn't want to prescribe meds. I suppose it's down to us to try and see if we can manage it with diet and lifestyle changes. And who said anything was easy?!
I am off to a concert on Saturday and my hubby and I have a hotel booked for an overnight stay. I was looking forward to a few drinks and a nice meal. I've been told not to touch alcohol pending my re-test and to avoid sugary food etc, etc. So I know how you must be feeling. I'd personally have A glass of champagne and a small piece of birthday cake and enjoy the celebrations that were planned before your diagnosis. And then, start the sensible eating plan etc the day after!
There is so much support on here. I've been pre-diabetic and the help I've received in the past has been fab. Stick with it and update us when you can x
