Hi Folks,

So, I've been on Metformin/Gliclazide (Type 2) - did nothing for me. Then got diagnosed with LADA and told now Type1. Insulin worked, but ignored for a long time and never got ratios right. Recently been on DAFNE course and my back ground was 26 units tiwce a day 9am and 9pm which held me strong. And my fast acting was 2 units per 10g carbs, but was told because I was over weight and insulin resistent that Metformin may help. So been on that a week with a 500mg Berberine tab...and already I've had to reduce the amount of fast acting as my reading's have all been in the Green even shortly after a carb meal. Today I woke and I'd been hypo all night...so had bagel, and 15g fast acting sugar, took 26 units background and no fast acting....and now 7.4 mmol/L and stable......what does this mean....maybe too early to say...but feels like maybe I'm not a full blown Type 1 and my pancreas is indeed producing insulin still....metformin and berberine must be helping because I've become very stable in the ranges for a week now! Any opinions/advice welcome. I continue to go to the gym and have 3 to 4 stone still to loose.
 
1.5/LADA can be erratic. You probably still have some beta cells that function when they feel like it, just not as you’d like. That can make predicting your glucose response inconsistent.

Does that mean you are not T1? No, because LADA is T1, just on the point in the disease continuum where you have some functioning beta cells and may not need insulin when diagnosed. But it is still an autoimmune response attacking and destroying your beta cells.

I don’t understand using the term Full Blown. Is that supposed to mean that you now need insulin? Is that supposed to imply that ALL your beta cells are gone? Each person with diabetes is different. Many people still have some beta cells which is one reason why different people have different insulin regimes. Also why there is research on protecting and regenerating remaining beta cells.

I do have a question. Why are you taking metformin AND berberine, since berberine is considered a natural form of metformin? Personally, I took the berberine until I talked my Endo into prescribing metformin. Much more economical to take the metformin and then you don’t need to worry about the accuracy of the berberine label. When I took it, there was an article about testing different brands and only about 3 actually contained what the label said.
 
Hi, I started looking for Metformin before I got it on prescription. So bought a tub of 240.....and 1 500mg 3 times a day is max dose. I've been started on similar dose of Metformin, hence only one of each.....I was on max does of metformin before 3000 mg per day. So only on the berberine until it runs out. I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2010, but suspect I had the condition many years before as used to go to the loo like a yo yo. When I say full blown, I meant Type 1, pancreas producing no or very little insulin. I will continue to monitor the situation, but have no hopes for a reversal of the condition....but if I could take less insulin where metformin works, then great.
 
Ok, even stranger. So yesterday, I took my usual 26 units of Lantus, and at breakfast, lunch and dinner too 1 x 500 mg Metformin and 500 mg Extra Strength Berberine HCL that also contains Banaba Leaf Extract. Normal day of eating, did have small amount of potatoes with dinner and a large slab of bread....woke this morning to 3.8!!!! So clearly I need to now reduce my background....this is so so strange. I've never experienced this while on Metformin and Gliclazide as a Type 2......
