Unusual test results

Hi, this is my first post, it seems I don't have diabetes but I did have the glucose tolerance test - blood taken, then drank lucozade, waited an hour and more blood taken.

I wanted the test done because for the previous month or two I was feeling strange if I did not eat for 5 or 6 hours. I would feel woozy and nauseous, spaced out and would go white and clammy. I thought it might be symptomatic of being "hypo". My friend has diabetes and he tested me one day with his Accucheck thing and the result was 7.6 which he said was high and advised me to get a proper test.

So, I did and that is where my question comes - the result of the first sample was 5.4 which I believe is fine, but the result of the sample after the Lucozade and the hours wait was 2.7 which I believe is very low. Below 4 is not normal is it?

I feel the need to ask here because my GP was quick to dismiss the result even though she admitted it was very low.

There was a note on the results (from the lab I assume) which said, "was he actually inactive in the hour interval?", which tells me they considered it abnormal. I was inactive, I sat in a chair and that is all.

I am afraid my GP is one of those that doesn't listen and her attitude of not being concerned about a result of 2.7 has left me confused.

If 2.7 is way below normal, how can she not be interested in that? As far as she is concerned the test results show I am not diabetic and that is the end of that.

I do not have any other health factors (that I know of) that could affect the result

This isn't a rant about my GP however, what I am hoping for is for someone to give me some advice about what to do now? Just accept everything is OK? Ask for another test? I have no confidence in my GP.

Thanks.

Is there anything that would cause the sugar level to fall from 5.4 to 2.7 in the space of an hour after a glucose drink? Apart from running a marathon.

Hi Stonebear

I'm no medic but I can offer my personnel experience and it may help. Before I was diagnosed I used to be Hypoglycemic a lot for a lot of years, just as you describe, sweaty ,pale clammy starving. I used to have to eat very regular otherwise I would feel weak a lot of the time... Now, these were nothing like the explosive Hypo's I had once I got onto insulin, but a milder form IYKWIM.

I know there is a condition ,a friend of mine had it, where by you have low blood sugars a lot of the time. Also there are a number of Endocrine disorders which can cause low blood sugars but you would really need to see a specialist to get checked out thoroughly.

2.7 seems very low for someone without some sort of problem going on who is not insulin dependent...but as I have said I used to have a lot of lows naturally, so did another friend of mine who was Type 1...he was low for a good two years before he developed Type 1.
That is not to say you will develop Diabetes, because I'm sure it isn't a precursor to developing it but it may be worth getting a second opinion if you keep getting the low blood sugar feelings ,as they are not fun.
If it carries on go see another GP and don't be fobbed off. I'm no expert on Lab reports but even those can come back in normal/borderline figures and there are still things not right...go on how you feel that is the best thing ,and if you don't feel right then chase it up
Good luck, I hope some of this helps

Thanks Fallenstar, I have done some reading and am more convinced than ever that my symptoms ARE those of hypoglycemia, as you say there are a number of reasons why this might be the case.

I have just sent off for a test kit and am going to test myself when I feel normal and also when I believe I am experiencing hypo symptoms.

I will also be switching to another GP.

I really appreciate your response, thank you.

Hey Stonebear glad it helped a bit

Let me know how you go and what happens with the home test, it will be interesting.

All the best and I hope you get to the bottom of it and start feeling a bit better.

Good idea about switching GP's

My non-diabetic H had a similar experience a few years ago. He does have fairly high fasting BGs despite eating lowcarb. I too am convinced that he had reactive hypoglycemia.
One of my daughters used to have extreme lows and would black out convulsing. The endo of the day said that I should take her to a pschyc!!!! She I do believe had hypoglycemia but these days has Candida overgrowth and survives on a very low carb regime to control it.
