Vegetarian suitable meds?

Metaformin is a chemical, metaformin itself is synthesised and uses no animal products.
Different makers however can put different things in the tablets.

Best bet is to tell your GP that you're veg, and they should make a note on your records.
Always ask the pharmacist if they know, and if you could see any ingredient list they have available.

You always get metaformin, but not always from the same manufacturer.
Same goes with most of the other drugs lists, i can't say anything about the eye drops.

I am a "proper" vegetarian in that I don't knowingly consume anything that is the product of animal slaughter. I don't always succeed at this :?

Virtually every medication that you take will have been subject to animal testing.

Personally, when there is smelly green fluid leaking from my ear and I'm in excruciating pain, or when I have had a second dental abscess in 6 weeks, or when my baby is screaming in pain and I can't get his temperature down, I'm not asking questions about whether or not the drugs being prescribed meet my ethical standards. I just want the pain to stop/baby to stop crying :| I can't avoid these facts of life

So I have differnet standards for medication than I would have for something like, say, toiletries and cosmetics.

You have to adopt a pragmatic approach to your healthcare or refuse all medical treatment, in which case, as a T1, you will die :|

That said, when I get my metformin prescription made up tomorrow, I will be asking the pharmacist to ensure that I am given the form that does not contain gelatin. The best we can do is the best we can do, as often as we can do it :?

I think having a long term condition means making compromises , it's a shame really.

Prescription made up today. No gelatin. But it does contain magnesium stearate, which may or may not be an animal product  :? :| I start the tablets tomorrow. Sometimes I think it is probably best not to look too closely, but I'm not good at that approach.

You're right Spiral, can be either!! The only way you can find out is contacting the manufacturers and as there are a lot of different manufacturers of generic Metformin it could be a big job!

There comes a point when I just can't be ars*d to go any further. The medication itself has been tested on animals, so even if all the ingredients were scrupulously vegan, the process that produced it isn't. But I'm still starting the medication in the morning and will continue to call myself a "proper" vegetarian, because I do the best I can as often as I can.

My metformin tasted weird yesterday and I looked at the pack an noticed the box was different (think chemist has been take over recently) so checked someone else's metfomin and ended up with three different makes of Metformin so feel confused.

I don't know why I bother staying a vegetarian as most meds seem to have animal derivatives in and i'm so miffed right now

I don't eat any products of slaughter (avoid animal rennett etc) but also take the view that if i can't get an essential med not in a gelatin capusle, then i will just have to swallow it as it is. I do hate it though....

I was surprised to see that apparently novomix has fish in it?? As it's derived from human DNA..

When I contacted Novo and querried whehter any animal products are used, they did e-mail back a comprehensive list of ingredients of each of there insulins.. Which no included animal products, but sadly I have lost the details of what they sent

I did a little research and came up with this that might interest you (does contain some of the meds that you'll currantly take to follow the links)

I would suggest you e-mail the relevant manufacutures, and ask they should be more than happy to oblige your request..
