Waking up on 3.7

I'm on mdi. I take basal insulin (Lantus) on waking, and my first bolus insulin (NovoRapid) of the day at the same time. When I wake up verging on hypo, as today, I delay my bolus insulin until after breakfast, but I go ahead and inject my 18 units of Lantus straightaway. I'm just wondering if that's what others would do?

It appears to be sensible to me. I split my basal and take them at around 9.30pm and between 7am and 9.30am depending on dose so as to avoid any concerns about basal, being slightly lower and waking. As I don't tend to have carbs for breakfast, I'd just eat my normal breakfast and then sugar surf the upticks till I felt that an adjustment was needed.

Much like yourself @lizdeluz I'd eat breakfast and bolus afterwards, on MDI I'd reduce the dose too so that I didn't end up back in the high 3's/low 4's before lunch.

Thank you very much for your advice. I've often wondered about splitting my basal but can't make up my mind. I eat about 8g carb at breakfast but if I wake up hypo, or nearly, I find that I "pay for it later" with a bs veering too far upwards. I'd need a cgm to be really sure what is going on.
