wasp sting

I have had a serious allergic reaction to a wasp sting and was given an intramuscular injection to help with the swelling and the itching. Wasp sting greatly improved this morning, but my morning blood sugar level has shot up to 11.8 instead of 5.9. Is this normal? I am prediabetic and take glyclazide. Can anyone help, please?

I would say that shock, pain, toxins and other stresses often affect blood glucose, so yes, it is fairly normal.
(other factors are exercise, sleep, lack of sleep, food intolerances, grief, other illnesses such as colds and flu... the list is pretty endless!)

I wouldn't worry about it unless it is a dramatic shift that lasts for more than a few days. At that point you might want to take medical advice in case something else is going on. And of course, take medical advice if your wasp sting gets worse and looks like it is turning nasty.

Hope that helps.

It is possible that the injection you were given was a steroid (I was given steroid cream when my cheek swelled up due to an allergic reaction).
Unfortunately, steroids are one of the things which cause our BG to rise.
This impact may hang around for a few days but, hopefully, you will go back to your normal levels soon.

Fingers crossed your swelling and itching has gone (a wasp bite sounds horrendous).

There are many things which affect our BG as well as food and drink: exercise, drugs (as you have seen), stress, ...
It is possible the stress of your sting was also causing your BG to rise.

Many, many thanks to you all for your help and interest. The following day I was back to 5.9 and things are back to normal again. It is just nice to know about these things and maybe this information can help someone else. Let's all try very hard to keep our numbers low!!
