This weekends theme is World Currency of past and the present .

Ooooh I remember my Mum getting me to turn the chair cushions upside down and dig down the sides looking for 'Three-penny Joeys' just before pay day when she was down to her last penny. We ALWAYS found at least 3, God knows how they got there, but the 'Joeys' often saved the day back in the 50's.

You have started me remembering the good times, when i was a apprentice mechanic we used to remove the back seats of the cars for lost coins. One old guy welded a shilling to the floor under his rear car seat for devilment.

OMG! A half-crown was a FORTUNE in the 50's. Was it the equivalent to 2s 6d? I can't remember. I think 'five bob' was a 'crown', 'ten bob' was the equivalent of 50p today, but back then 'ten bob' went a loooooooooooooooooong way.

I used to spend all day Sunday pushing a pram up and down the street, complete with baby, to earn my money for next Saturday morning's cinema. All the girls in our street had their own 'baby' to mind and we didn't encroach on each other's territory. We kept our eye on the pregnant women in the street and worked out who was going to get the job of 'pram pushing'. We had to keep our eyes skinned for new 'customers' because of course the babies we were pushing eventually learned to walk and we were out of a job then. That was 'babysitting' in those days, we didn't sit in the house watching TV while the parents went out and the kids were in bed, we walked the flipping feet off ourselves and our 'success' was rated by whether we actually lulled the child to sleep or not. That and 'snotty nose wiping' was an art, I tell ya! :lol:
 
Well I do remember when a Mars bar was 6d (yes that's the equivalent of 2.5p). Last time I looked they were about the 11/- (shillings) mark. I also used to buy a penny stick of toffee for the cat who would sit and lick it until it doubled over and then would lick it the other way. Don't know how he managed to keep his teeth! Have a good weekend everyone :thumbup:
 

I think that was me disguised as your cat! I loved those 'Penny Arrow Bars' as we called them. They also sold them in licquorice flavour too and they were lovely. Then there were Black Jacks and Fruit Salad sweets. I think they've all made a come back now but probably need a mortgage for them now. :lol:
