I moved house last November, and didn't get round to registering with a doctor - I never go near them as a rule, it must be about 8 years since I last saw a doc. But I had a routine eye test a couple of weeks ago, and the pressure in my eyes was just above the level that triggers a letter to your doctor.
So I joined up, and had a first appt with the nurse last Friday, and my urine sample had sugar in it. She wants me to drop off another sample on Friday, but I know I have Type 2 - I've done a lot of research into it over the past few days, and spoken to a friend who was diagnosed 18 months ago. I have excessive weeing, tingly feet, I'm about 1.5 stone overweight, permanently tired ... I think I've known for quite a while, really, and been in denial about it all.
But I'm not going to do that any more - I'm going to take control of this, which might not be all that easy, because I'm pretty needle-phobic! I actually started exercising about three weeks ago, and I've gone onto a low fat diet now (thankfully, our diet is pretty good already, so it's not *that* hard).
I know I'm going to have a lot of questions - it seems to me that facilities and treatments vary quite a lot from area to area. My first one is: should I actually make an appointment to take in the next sample, rather than drop it off? It seems to me that it would save a few days, but does it matter?
Also, glucose monitors - do they give you these on the NHS? I know you get free prescriptions, and that some strips and needles are available on prescription, but can you choose what you want?
That'll do for now - so glad I found you all ... it's all a bit daunting, really.
