I moved house last November, and didn't get round to registering with a doctor - I never go near them as a rule, it must be about 8 years since I last saw a doc. But I had a routine eye test a couple of weeks ago, and the pressure in my eyes was just above the level that triggers a letter to your doctor.

So I joined up, and had a first appt with the nurse last Friday, and my urine sample had sugar in it. She wants me to drop off another sample on Friday, but I know I have Type 2 - I've done a lot of research into it over the past few days, and spoken to a friend who was diagnosed 18 months ago. I have excessive weeing, tingly feet, I'm about 1.5 stone overweight, permanently tired ... I think I've known for quite a while, really, and been in denial about it all.

But I'm not going to do that any more - I'm going to take control of this, which might not be all that easy, because I'm pretty needle-phobic! I actually started exercising about three weeks ago, and I've gone onto a low fat diet now (thankfully, our diet is pretty good already, so it's not *that* hard).

I know I'm going to have a lot of questions - it seems to me that facilities and treatments vary quite a lot from area to area. My first one is: should I actually make an appointment to take in the next sample, rather than drop it off? It seems to me that it would save a few days, but does it matter?

Also, glucose monitors - do they give you these on the NHS? I know you get free prescriptions, and that some strips and needles are available on prescription, but can you choose what you want?

That'll do for now - so glad I found you all ... it's all a bit daunting, really.

Hi ramtops and welcome to the forum.
Hope you do not have to join us, I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I don't think it will make a lot of difference about your urine sample, do what works best for you.
I am not too clear from your post if you have had any other tests for a diagnosis?

Meters can usually be obtained from the Nurse as they get lots of freebies from Reps. It is not the meters but the strips that are a job to get for some. There is a postcode lottery and you may be refused. The strips do vary in price and so it may pay you to get one with cheaper strips. You can buy them in any pharmacy.

Keep reading around the forum as there is lots of advice here and ask as many questions as you need to.

Catherine.

Hi Ramtops and welcome to the forum

Have a good look at the diet threads as you will find those really helpful. Let us know how you get on with the diagnosis.
