i had my docs appointment today to confirm my diagnosis of Diabetes and what a waste of time it was.

It was a locum doctor, very pleasant but not at all informative. He printed out an information sheet from Patient.co.uk on Diabetes handed it to me and asked me what I wanted to do about medication - I was like .

I asked if I was type 1 or 2, he said "type 2 - for now....."
I then asked if I was likely to be on meds for life and his reply - "well it's going to take a minor miracle!!". In other words get used to it fatty.
I asked if I could leave off medication for now - I want to lose weight, see how my body reacts - he said fine see you in 3 months then, ohh and you'll be added to our Diabetic list for recall.
I asked him about diet and mentioned LC FF and he looked at me like I was barking.
I feel so let down and lost...
 
Welcome back where you belong. Glad you didn't hit him or have a conniption. In three months they'll be amazed at your progress and still won't accept how you've done it.
 
I kept thinking "nodding dog" but ended up looking like a "stunned fish".

I need to get a grip on this so I know what I'm doing, and prove it works.

I have a deplorable history on diets but this is important - I had thought perhaps he'd atleast recommend reading but nope I have 2 and a half printed pages encompassing diabetes 1, diabetes 2 and exercise - a whole 2 and half pages....
 
How can you be type 2 for now?? Uneducated gp syndrome there
You could be misdiagnosed as type 2 but you will never turn into a type 1 from a type 2 unless an autoimmune attack happens!! The 2 types are different illnesses altogether and all gp's need to be made aware of that

I had a general nurse who gave me nothing except a tiny scrap of paper (the type they put the next appointment on) with the Web address for diabetes uk on. That was it! Lucky for me I stumbled into the forum
 
Is that right Type1Bri? He told me I'd become a type 1 if I had to take insulin!!
 
No you would then be a type 2 controlled by insulin. Type 1 is where the beta cells in the pancreas have been killed off by my own immune system, easily proved by a gad antibody test, will be high in a type 1. Type 2 is where the body does not use the insulin made by the pancreas effectively, therefore the pancreas makes more and more insulin until eventually it gives out, then it will be type 2 controlled by insulin.
The tablets, metformin, help the body to use the insulin made by the Pancras more efficiently. The diet and exercise approach simply make the body less resistant to insulin meaning it works more effectively. Low carb diets cab help as carbs turn to glucose and this is what the insulin works to get out of the blood and into energy.

Lol your welcome. Wish it was a Dr giving you this info, I guess they need to know something about all illnesses and they just group diabetes as one illness where it's something to do with blood sugars and insulin. Bit like thinking if you can ride a pushbike you can ride a 200 mph motorbike, totally different ballgame!!
 
I feel a bit out of my depth and I have you guys, pity help those who haven't found their way here yet
 
Misspooh I was told the same by a nurse in January and felt confused and let down by the NHS, then I found this forum and have learnt a lot by just reading other people's questions and answers. Very friendly people as wall.

I was in the same position as you just over a year ago.
What I did:
LCHF for life.
No alcohol or sweets, cakes, crisps,chocolate, biscuits for first 3 months.
Kepta diary of all food consumed and test and weight results.
Tested before and 2 hours after meals.
Bought own blood glucose monitor. I recommend SD code free as strips are about £5 a pot if you buy 5 pots at a time.
Cooked from scratch.
Ditched takeaways.
I lost 4 stone in weight in a year and brought bs down to 5s.
Sometimes I have the odd piece of cake or handful of crisps or sweets. But not often. I drink at weekend but a couple of small glasses of wine or a couple of G&Ts. More with friends occasionally.

I was diagnosed as prediabetic last October - picked up by a routine blood test. My new GP then added 'Oh, I see you were prediabetic a year ago'. My then GP hadn't thought to mention it! At least you got a scrap a paper with limited advice. I was sent away, pretty stunned to say the least, with absolutely no advice or guidance whatsoever.

I thank the Lord I stumbled upon this site.

Thanks Scandichic you're experience is amazing and I'd be proud of myself if I'm in a similar situation this time next year.
I have about 6 stone to lose. I know this week I've lost loads, probably cos I'm not eating much at all, mainly because I'm not sure what to eat, breakfast is hardest for me.....I'm thinking as a type - I miss my weetabix and raisins
 
I used to love my porridge in the morning, but that's now ruled out. Instead I eat 100 grms full fat Fage Greek yogurt with, maybe, three strawbs or a handful of blueberries/raspberries sprinkled with flaxseed.

If you like eggs, bacon etc. you'll have a savoury option. Eggs are great, however cooked.
