What’s normal

Good afternoon

My partner had routine bloods done last week everything was ok except hba1ac and I think it was around 80-90 I don’t know for sure. He’s 58 6ft and 15.5 stone, the has had to have a full ultrasound today before his appointment with the diabetic nurse tomorrow. Cannot help but worry about this scan is it normal practice? He has had gout a couple of times in last 18 months. Both brothers early 60s are diabetic. Thanks in advance for any responses. Vic
 
I was diagnosed when 57, 6 ft and 14.5 stone.
Taking off a couple of stone (a bit slowly) improved things a lot.
I didn't have an ultrasound scan but things have no doubt changed since 2007.
I wonder if they are checking the amount of visceral fat?
This is an important factor in developing diabetes and also (by losing it) in better control.

I have also had gout, but I suspect that may have been more due to drinking beer than the diabetes.

Looking back, if I had lost the weight much more quickly I would probably be better than I am today, although at 15 years diagnosed and still on diet and pills I am not doing too bad.
Currently just under 12 stone.
 
I suspect the ultrasound as littlegreycat said, is to measure visceral fat, probably to see if he is a good fit for the latest low calorie program the NHS are offering. I never had one done 4 years ago, but within 3 months of low carbing, my Hba1c was back in non diabetic numbers anyway.
