Hi
When I first started lowish carb, my morning readings were low to mid 5s, these have gradually crept up to high 5s or low 6s. My BG then drops at +2 after my midday meal, then rises again about 3 or more hours after eating my last meal, which has been 4 crisp breads (28g total carb), with butter, and a couple of small eggs, to mid 7s.
About an hour after my dinner at midday, ( about 3oz lean chicken, carrot, spinach and brocoli), I did 10 mins on the bike to get the heart working etc, then spent the rest of the afternoon gardening. Why are these readings creeping up? I don't think I can cut down much more.

At least I am not getting any more of those horrible spikes, which is good. The numbers aren't particularly bad, but I had hoped that they might have been better. How low would I have to go to get a 4.5 in the morning and maybe the highest reading of 5.5? I haven't lost any weight either, don't really need to, but there is a bit of spare that could go.

Any ideas appreciated.
Haven't been able to do a GTT as can't find any Lucozade - hopefully one of our friends will bring some out.

I had hoped that someone might have had some idea as to why my BG readings are creeping up throughout the day, based on what I am eating. Please give me a few thoughts. I am pretty new to low carb etc so advice would be appreciated.

Hi Halfpint, it sounds like you are doing everything right. Your evening meal is very small, perhaps you are getting a liver dump because you are not quite eating enough? Do you like avocado? I am starting to replace the protein in one meal with avocado because I think I am eating too much. Maybe you are particularly carb sensitive in the evening, why not try swapping your meals around so that the very low carb meal is in the evening and the crisp breads etc are at lunch time. Some on here recommend eating their largest amount of carbs in the middle of the day.

Just thoughts and suggestions ... you're numbers are good! Don't get disheartened!

Thanks for the input Fraddycat. I can't stand Avocado reminds me of putty. I could easily cut down to 2 crispbreads in the evenings, with the eggs its quite substantial, no hunger problems. I have never eaten all that much so cutting out the spud and bread hasn't really been that much of an issue, I just put in a bit more protein which I probably do need. We were a bit protein light before.

I am currently waiting for some more strips, once I have them I will try as you suggest and swap the slightly more carby meal to lunchtime and see how that works.

I has just upped the cycling as its currently pouring with rain and I can't get out into the garden. Now doing 10 mins in the morning and another 10 mins in the afternoon.

Tell me, if one loses weight to the very lean point, probably slightly underweight, so that presumably the liver wouldn't have much fat stored, would the 'liver dumps' stop or reduce? I was just wondering if one runs the body on the 'tank virtually empty' then presumably there wouldn't be much fat to dump.`???

Hi again, well done with the exercise it will really help bring your blood glucose down. The liver stores glucose, and so a liver dump is when the liver pumps glucose into the blood stream, its quite common to get a liver dump early in the morning. The theory is that is the body readying itself for the day. That's why quite often our fasting readings are higher than we would like, this is known as the dawn phenomenon or DP.

I don't exactly know why it happens during the day, but I have found that if I go a couple of hours past a meal, sometimes my BGs can be high, which I put down to a liver dump, but I don't know that for sure. But others here on the forum have fasted for a couple of days and have not had this problem so I don't really understand it.

Maybe others will advise ..
