I was on holiday in France a year past January I lost 20lbs in weight in about 4 days.
I was admitted to hospital & stayed there 11 days having been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
I thought this problem only affected young people so it came as a big surprise as I was 67 years old.
It has meant a dramatic change in lifestyle remembering to inject 4 times a day, count the carbs etc.
I play golf & depending on the weather my sugar level can drop down to 2.5 after 6 holes.
There seems to be a big learning curve & it helps to be a mathematician.
Any helpful advice would be gratefully received.
I also play golf and can get through 4 or 5 bananas, one or two biscuits and some jelly babies over 18 holes.... I generally eat the first banana on the way up to the first hole and then just top up every 2 or 3 holes. After a while you get to know just when to top up as you go round. The other thing with your golf is to keep well topped up with water as dehydration can give the same symptoms as a low blood sugar...
Quite a shock for you. On basal/bolus you have to adjust your insulin for exercise so that your bg doesn't drop too low, either that or you have to eat more carbs.
If you ask your DSN about going on a carb counting course such as DAFNE they cover all this plus much more, in the mean-time you can register with the following site which is an on-line version of the DAFNE course:
Gosh I bet that was a shock, though I bet you felt better once you got some treatment! I'm not T1, so can't help you there, but I'm a friendly face and can offer you some general support. Welcome to the forum x
Some ideas here, the whole site is worth looking at as it gives a lot of info on diabetes and sport. http://www.runsweet.com/Golf.html
PS, been there done that, I live in France and was diagnosed at 53. They only kept me in for 10 days! (but they did test me for everything else under the sun as well)
