I have been diabetic for over 30 years now, and i have been on many different insulins..and Levimir is the best yet, giving me far better control. I split teh dose too, and was changed onto Levimir, when I was pregnant, as I seemed to "run out" of basal insulin after 18 hours or so. I have no idea why it wasn't suggested why I didn't split my lantus, except that teh profile of levimir, suited my needs better.
Personally, I love the basal bolus routine, as I am indecisive, don't always know what i am going to eat until I star cooking, and it suited me well during my student days, when mylife was very erratic. I like the fact that I can change the insulin to suit my life, and not change my life to suit my insulin. This is not the case for everybody though, and my strongest belief is that people should be allowed, where possible, to use what best works for them...rather than the Drs favourite insulin.
