They say , keep control of your BG levels, how can one check this with a meter? does it not have to go over a certain number
should it always be below a certain number it gets me confused at to what it should be on my meter, this morning before breakfast it was 5.8 but after certain meals it can go top 8.7 now is that to high ?
i just wish I knew what to look for.

Hi! The key is to test 2 hours after eating. At thatb stage, most of us aim for a target of less than 7.8
If it's more than that, cut out some of the carbs you had in that meal the next time. Morning readings are a bit confusing because of things like the dawn phenomenon, so I'd concentrate on the after meal readings. Keep careful noters of what you ate to get the different readings, and you'll soon be able to work out what you can and can't eat.

5.8 is an excellent before breakfast reading well done

If you want to see how that compares to other members why not post your before breakfast reading on this thread http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=23574&start=1125 along with lots of others, including me most days as you will see how well you are actually doing!

As Grazer says when you are first diagnosed the early morning readings can get effected by a thing called dawn phenomenon. Don't worry too much about that as we all get that and there's not a lot you can do about it. It will gradually get better as you improve your other readings.

What I would concentrate on is the readings you get when you eat your main meal. Just measure before you start and then two hours after you finish. You are looking to have the before you start one between 4 and 7. The one you do two hours later should end up under 8. If the one after two hours ends up a above 8 it tells you that you ate a meal with too many carbs in it so you need to adjust its content next time. Remember the main sources of carbs in a meal will be things like rice, pasta, potato, cereals, bread and other things made from flour like pastry. Oh and sugar!
