"What have you eaten" Parallel Chat

@Annb - I agree with Mrs A2 that it is quite an array of tests. More perplexing is the fact they haven't uncovered anything. I'm still plodding along. I was up at brother's for a while yesterday taking up more of my Hubby's prolific soup making. He turns out industrial sized quantities of soup! He was tired yesterday but answered my questions. He seems focused enough when it is one person speaking but I'm not sure how aware he is if a few people are speaking at once. It's quite distressing that my clever brother is being so affected.
Snow has been a bit of a nightmare. There was no way I could get to physio on Tuesday. It took 30 mins to clear the car but even then I would have to have dug the car out all the way to the road and that was not going to happen. We took our time and got it dug out for Wednesday when Hubby had his vaccination appointment. I honestly didn't think we'd get there as it was an evening appointment at the QMU Drive through but, it proved such a nightmare trying to change the appointment it was easier to dig the car out and just take our time getting there. He got the Pfizer one too and no reaction to it at all. I'm next Thursday at the same drive through.
We decided to continue with the home schooling this week and give them next week off. If it works out it means the youngest will go back to school the Monday after the holiday (although I see the "dentist" was making noises it might not happen. Eldest grandson had a really good week despite another of his Guinea pigs dying on Monday evening. He was distraught because that just leaves one now so we've been phoning around in search of girls. We've tracked some down that come out of quarantine tomorrow so we're heading out to get two new piggies. He doesn't know. We got him a new "Guinea House" so he thinks he is going to get some toys for the one surviving piggy.
I noticed they mentioned wildfires on the WI @Annb? I assume it's on one of the other islands. Seems odd wildfires with all this snow.
Otherwise I'm just plodding on.

@Antje77 have you been skating on any canals? The BBc reported it tonight... then added its the first time Amsterdam canals have frozen since....wait for it... 2018!!!!

Not been skating in Amsterdam, it's a 2 hour drive away!
But I have been on the ice in my area, although not on skates, I don't really like ice skating.
Tomorrow I'll post some pictures of my pets in the snow, not a clue how to do so on my phone

Beware, pet spam!

And last but not least, chickens have taken over my bathroom at night. As soon as it gets a little warmer they will be kicked out again and the bathroom will receive a very thorough cleaning. But for now I just can't get myself to put them outside.

As usual, I am a puzzle. I keep thinking I am being a hypochondriac, but there's no imagination about the swollen abdomen and legs. I suppose one could think the breathlessness is caused by panic, but I'm not a panicky kind of person. Currently my weight has increased to 171/2 stone.

I was surprised to hear that the Southern Isles were suffering from wildfires - they've been having snow as well. I suppose it must be just a small amount but not enough to counteract the dryness of the grass and heather once the snow has gone. Then yesterday No 2 son and DIL went to South Lochs to deliver some laundry and wildfires are spreading there (apparently bad enough to cause villages there to be evacuated). My son took one excellent photo of snow covered hills behind flaming moorland.

Elder granddaughter has been isolating with her family since we went into tier 4 but is facing a quandry now - her eldest is 10 and is not to go back to school next week, her 2nd is 7 and is due to go back part-time next week. Normally No 2 son picks them up and gets them to school - it fits in with his working hours, but the part-time hours don't. It is going to cause issues within the little family - the 7 year old doesn't see why she should go to school when her brother can't. Her school is quite a distance away for them to walk (no school transport because they chose a school further away than the appointed one). It would mean the whole family, including the new baby, traipsing about 4 miles at 10 am, hanging around for a couple of hours, and then traipsing home again. There is nothing to do anywhere near the school, so to pass the time they would then all have to walk 3 miles into the town and then back again. I suspect the home schooling will continue.

2nd grandson - 14 years old - has also to go to classes part time. That means his hours don't fit in with school buses (free) and he has to use the service buses - about £3 a day. DIL not happy about that.

I also feel for the teachers - particularly the primary ones. They have to take part time classes of (in Em's case) P3 but they have composite classes (P3/4/5) so they will have to put in the extra hours online to cover the P4 and 5's.

Well done your hubby @maglil55, he should receive an award as a champion soup maker. Your brother and his family must be glad to receive all the support you are offering.

BG still too high. Started out with 10.0 at 2.30 this morning (that's my normal getting up time these days). 2 hours, 2 Cocodamol and a cup of tea later it was 13.5. Breakfast was 60 units of Humilin S, 2 eggs poached on top on a few vegetables - all low carb. 2 hours later - 17.5! At present I have some pork shoulder and more veggies in the oven. I took it out of the freezer last night, thinking it was lamb shoulder but it turned out to be pork.

@Annb - the school thing is a bit daft. If anything I would have said P7 would be the class to go back with them due to move to senior school. I still say though grandson had the best idea for absolutely everyone to stay exactly where they are and forget this year happened.
Went on the guinea hunt today but they were smaller than expected so still in quarantine. However, we found another girl who was ready to move so grandson is overjoyed. New piggy is Laffy. He reckons his Mum & I were really sneaky keeping it secret but he's happy we did. Laffy is now being introduced to Halo the existing resident of the new Guinea House.

I have to agree with your grandson. I know there would be repercussions but I don't think it would do too much harm if all pupils and students repeated a year. After traumas, it takes a while to recover (eg after WW2 - the country was broke, kids had missed school and many had lost everything, housing was scarce, jobs had disappeared etc). It takes a while to recover, but it can be done. The whole country is in for the long haul. All very well for me though - I am a pensioner and haven't got to look for a job and am quite comfortable in the house all the time.

Laffy is a very handsome guinea pig. Your grandson must be very happy.

He is indeed - you're both correct @Annb & @Antje77. Laffy is a very good looking girl and very friendly. Her sisters were picking on her so it struck a note with grandson who felt she was meant for them. He's very protective.

Awww soo cute! Enjoy!

They don't seem to be much bothered by the weather

Is that one of your guineas out in the snow? I thought they didn't like cold?

I thought so too!
The first few days of snow we had there was a very icy eastern wind, and they stayed inside their houses. But as soon as the wind went down they came out again, happy to do their thing outside! They're amazing little creatures!

Breakfast at 8 am - 60 units of Humilin S and 3 eggs scrambled in a little butter. Since then, nothing but water and my BG is down to 11.5 but I am very hungry and will have to have a think about what I can eat and not put BG up any further. I have some cold pork which should be OK but would really like to have something with it. Feeling like throwing it all to the wind and making some chips. Probably not.

Raining on the islands today and the fires seem to have been put out. Apparently they were burning in several locations on Lewis.

FBG 12.0. An improvement on yesterday, but still not good.

Edited to add: 1.30 pm, after breakfast of 60 units of Humilin S, 2 RyVita crackerbreads and some butter and a mug of tea with milk - 20.5!

I just feel like going to the local shop and buying myself a box of chocolates and just sitting, scoffing them. I won't because I know even one would make me feel sick, but that's what I feel like right now. Dangerous, because I might search out something in the house, equally bad for me but not sugary. Not cheesey either - I had some cheese last night and have rather over-done that particular food item. Can't face any more right now. Nor can I face any more pork just now. I do have some berries, but even though they're not too bad, sugar-wise, they will still put my BG up even more.

Just read an article about hormone imbalances perhaps causing excess abdominal fat and fluid retention - problems which I have in bounteous measure. I think it was indicating that a low carb diet could help, but it hasn't helped me.

DIL has been having problems recently with BG - she was put onto a new insulin but the GP surgery refused to prescribe sufficient test strips to keep a close eye on what was happening. The finally did, after diabetic nurse insisted, at which point DIL could see that her BGs were high (not as high as mine, but high enough) and that the insulin wasn't working at all. She was also given test strips for ketones which indicated that she was in trouble so she phoned NHS24. They told her to go to A&E. She was admitted to the medical ward immediately and will be there, probably all day tomorrow at least.

This means that Em had to come here this evening and will be here tomorrow. So she will miss the online meeting with her teacher in the morning and have to do some school work here. She was to have made pancakes with her mum this evening, but that didn't happen and she wants to make them here tomorrow. I will try to avoid eating them.

Didn't have another meal and BG remains high (13.5 at present).

Hope your DIL gets sorted out. I have to admit though, your BGs are a total mystery!

Em's here at the moment - pancakes made and she's eaten all she wants so the rest will have to get wrapped up and taken home. In fact, she ended up deciding to make dropped scones, not crepes. Still had them with lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar. DIL will be getting home this afternoon. I didn't eat any! Honest.

Streaky bacon, done in the oven and a couple of fried eggs this morning. With Em here I tend not to have enough to drink so I am having a mug of hot tea just now. Haven't tested since this morning, so I don't know what BG is right now.

I don't really understand this ketones business. Are ketones desirable or not? When does it become a bad thing? Not that I have any way of measuring mine, so it's academic really.

Contacted the surgery about my blood test on Friday. Kidneys are better than they have been in the past (GFR up from 30 about a month ago to 45) so back onto the Metformin when I eat this evening. I wonder if that will do anything to improve my BG - it has been slightly higher these last few days.
