my levels have been around 51, 47 50, 55, 47. But gp hasn't prescribed medication. He said the numbers are not that bad and I should aim to control them with diet. To be honest I don't really want to take medication. What is the limit after which meds need to be given.
Only you and your GP can determine that (we're not professionals by any means) but (to me) those numbers look reasonably good. They could be a little better (around the low 40s or high 30s) but compared to some I've seen, they're not too bad. Keep going
I have controlled my levels with diet only starting from an HbA1c of 65. Yours are quite manageable from there, but they have been going up and down. What are you typically eating?

I started a good deal higher than you, and have never taken medication. With lower numbers, I understand a decision to prescribe any medication would be influenced by any symptoms being suffered by the patient. Although my numbers were much higher, I was symptom-free.
Many people on here have managed for a long time, without medication.
