What is going on with my blood sugars?

Can someone give me some advice? My blood sugars have been quite stable last 6-7 months and I have felt v in control. A few weeks back I had an infection on my toe nail which some ABs cleared up but during that time my BS were a bit all over the place.

Since Thursday my blood sugars have been v erratic but I don't feel unwell and don't know of any infection. Friday I woke up 13.2 but it quickly came down after insulin. Saturday I woke up at 6am 4.1, so ate a cereal bar and went back to sleep. Woke up 12.4!! Went to the gym after lunch. Pre exercise 13.1, post exercise 12.1, and then 8.9 after dinner. Woke up Sunday morning 9.8. Not brilliant. 13.4 before lunch, then before dinner had hypo 3.6.

Woke up this morning 10.3 and had breakfast. 2 hrs post breakfast 15.5 (?!!!) and gave correction. 1.5hrs after correction 15, had lunch, then before dinner this evening had another hypo of 3.8.

My insulin dose is lantus 28, novo rapid 1u to 5g. I have been on this ratio for years Altho lantus has been gradually reduced in past 6 months from 34.

I don't know what's going on. Imnot really under a lot of stress at the moment although I am incredibly tired from work. Like I said I dont feel under the weather so I just can't wrk out what's happening. Normally exercise helps straighten out my BS but it hasn't seemed to touch them lately

Any help will be much appreciated

If I were you and I couldn't put my finger on any routine change that would effect my BGs then I would go back to basics; do some fasting days and check that my basal is correct.. if BGs are stable under fasting then move onto bolus ratio's..

Thank you for your replies. Sorry if I seem ignorant but what are fasting days?? The infection may well be coming back, my toe is still sore so it's a possibility. I have a hospital apt on Monday for review so will mention it then.

'fasting days' are just where you don't eat, or you eat foods that don't have any carbohydrate in, and only take your background insulin (the lantus). If the lantus dose is right then your blood sugars will stay roughly level all through the day. If it's rising, you know you might need a bigger lantus dose; if it's going low, you know your lantus dose is a bit high.
Then you know that's fine and can concentrate on whether you've got the right novorapid ratio for the carbs you eat when you do eat carbs.

of course it depends on you being able to do the following all through your fasting day(s):
a) avoid exercise and alcohol that might have an extra impact
b) not eat even though you are stressed

...easier said than done. I bet if your toe is still sore you are still battling a bit of infection - so if you can't do the fasting days you might want to just cope with the higher bgs by increasing your basal a little bit. Not a perfect solution but life with T1 ain't perfect.

Hello,

It's annoying when you get unexpected results, isn't it.

I recently had a very unexpected result. Twenty minutes after a stressful two hour journey as a car passenger, immediately followed by a one mile brisk walk, the test result was 17.5.

The only thing I can think of is whether your pen is delivering insulin precisely and whether the insulin is out of date or has become degraded.

Hi, not sure whether I can help but I noticed that you said you have been stressed.
My sugars use to go up to the 30s when I was working, especially during times of excessive stress. Correction doses would only bring me down with a bump when I had finished work. Does this sound like you? I ended up practicing meditation/breathing exercises during my lunch hour to calm my nerves, which helped on some days. Its possible that adrenaline is pushing your sugars up, I would suggest finding ways to help stress and see if this helps.

My sugar levels jump massively when I'm stressed. My job is stressful, and working to tight/ridiculous sudden deadlines makes sky rocket, then crash on my way home. Makes me really tired and after a few days, i'm completely useless.

Also, worrying about your sugar levels can add to it all. My do toe and DSN told me not to test for a while because they felt I was panicking about them on top of everything else.

Good luck, hope they calm down.

When i was in the hospital, another patient was given an insulin to help her feel better. She's also using Tylenol liquid but not sure if it is sugar free or not.
