What's happening?! Rising glucose at night.

Not really knowing what's going on inside my Endocrine system!!!
I never seem to get a full night's sleep and tend to drift awake at least 1 - 3 times a night (this has been happening for months)

I did raise the question of high night readsings when I used to wake feeling horribly ill with readings between 11 - 13 and some suggestions were made (I've since stopped all vitamins/kalms/cod liver oil/hayfever pills about 3 weeks ago). I've not had a repeat but stuck with a constantly dry throat no matter how much water I drink.

THIS TIME, I decided to take readings EVERY time I woke up last night.

(I should have taken one before going to bed but will see if I can repeat this experiment).

at 2:38am it was 7.6 ( I was thirsty and went to the loo)
at 4:18am it was 8.7 (thirsty again and went to the loo)

My reading this morning was 9.0 on waking at 6.55am.

So liver dumping? Why on earth is it dumping more and more from that early in the night?
 
Don't know the answer, but do suffer from the same symptoms. Will be watching for replies. Going slightly mad with the insomnia myself. Did get a good nights sleep last weekend, but I think that was mind over matter as i didn't want to get out of the tent to trail to the loo.lol
 
Just a reply to bump this up again as a fellow dry throat sufferer! Always early in the morning, but before I want to wake up!
 
Hi, are any of you sleeping 'breathing through your mouths' ?
I only mention this as my GP suggested to me this could be why I was so thirsty in the middle of the night. The soreness and dryness was waking me up also.
If it is wasnt this, it was the need for the loo and another thirst quenching drink!
Becomes a catch 22 thing! Ring anyones bells?

Last night:
I did a bedtime reading at 10pm of 7.1
(2 squares of d.choc at 8.30pm and 2 G &Ts -slim line tonic)
before that 1 chicken breast, lettuce and half a tomato at 7pm)

'drifted' awake as usual
(these are never sudden waking up episodes by the way) needing the loo never wakes me up, this happens once I wake up.

1:10am - dry throat, water then loo - reading 7.6

Woke up again from a weird dream (don't know what time, too tired to test) but glugged more water and went to sleep

My first reading this morning 8.2

Something is definitely going on. I'm concluding as I'm T2 - therefore insulin resistant so where a little glucose rise would be ok for non Diabetics/Controlled, I clearly need some help here. :evil:

Roll on the 24th which is 'D-day' (when I see the Diabetologist to conclude what's happening and medication).

Btw I drink 1.5litres of water per day - decaf coffee / tea - usually one of each but never in the evening.
 


Hahaha - I'm sure I'm a bit of a "mouth breather" at night :lol: I've woken up sometimes and felt I was breathing through my mouth, not every time though.

I decided to look at the back of my throat and compared it to hubby's - I've got redness back there ...so I'm concluding I've got a bug of some sort...Thing is I've had sore throats, I've had Pharyngitis and Laryngitis on two occasions each, and this is nothing like it. I do remember going through periods of dry throat over the years but just used to glug Linctus (even in the night when it gets bad) and only now I thought I'd look at the back of my throat... :?

Got an appointment with the doc this Thurs to check further.

So get a mirror, get a under a light and check your throats people :lol:

Edit: I've now developed a mouth ulcer... :shock: something's going on here...
 
I suffer from insomnia which seems to be a rare side effect of metformin.Good news is that after two years I am now beginning to string some good nights together.Part of the reason for waking at a specific time was feeling hungry.

I too found that I was experiencing "liver dumping" or dawn phenomenom,and that this seemed to arise from a too tightly controlled diet.Following advice from this forum I now either eat four smaller meals per day,last taken at 8.00pm,or I have a small snack at 8.00pm.Either way this seems to reduce or stop the amount of glucose released overnight and I now quite often wake up with a blood sugar reading at the top end of normal.

Medication 3x500mg metformin,plus 2x30 minutes of vigourous exercise per day.

can you give me an example of a small meal that you eat at 8pm?

2 slices of granary toast at 8.00pm,or my current favourite which is a small portion of unsalted peanuts and fruit (Sainsburys only).
I was told to aim for a bedtime glucose reading of 7.0-8.0.If I achieve this I wake up with a fasting level of 5.5-5.7.If I get it wrong like last night I wake up with this mornings level of 6.6 or more.I am not convinced that the nightime dumping harms you:it is the natural response to your levels dropping below 5.0 or so during the night and quite often means you are doing a good job of controlling your diet and not taking in excess calories.It also happens to me when I take too much exercise too late in the evening.The dumping stops when you have breakfast,which can feel counter intuitive when your levels are high.

Okay - went to the doc and she said there is nothing wrong with my throat. She asked if I have a dry mouth and I said no, never, it's specifically the throat.

She said to wait until the 24th to see if the Diabetologist can shed further light on it, and it it persists she will refer me to a specialist.
 
Hello - excuse my ignorance as I don't have a medical background, but could it be that it is healthy for the liver to be able to release a certain amount of glucose each morning? I myself, have been eating something late at night - figuring, that if my liver is going to increase my blood sugar in the morning as it thinks my body needs it to spring into action - then I might as well have the pleasure of gnawing on something last thing. However, it has just struck me that if one's control of one's sugar levels is so good - then the liver does not need to contribute and this in itself could give the liver a problem as it will have to store the glucose as opposed to processing it. This may be all total nonsense. Is there any-one with a medical background who might be able to comment? Thanks
