I have been looking at different blood test metres but I am not sure which one to buy as I do not understand how testing goes. Could anyone tell me what is the difference between Md/dl or the Mmol/l and which is the best to get. I am newly diagnosed with type 2 and want to find out which foods are affecting my blood sugars so I can alter my diet effectively. Also how many times can I use a lancet does it have to be a new one each time? My GP surgery have told me that I do not need to monitor my bloods but from everything I have read in here it seems the only way to go to get full control over the condition. Thanks in advance.

Hi wmcoy,

This, http://www.phlaunt.com/ is a great site and you will be able to learn a lot there.

I think that in your area the common measurement for blood glucose is milli-moles per liter. The other system uses milli grams per deciliter.

One milli mole of glucose is 180 milligram, so that for example 5 millimoles will be 5x180= 900 milligrams per liter. ie 90 milligrams per deciliter.

Hope that this helps

I have a Bayer Contour Next. I quite like the features;logs and trends in particular. I really like that once I have the strip in the meter it gives me 3 minutes to get a sample on it. And if you don't get quite enough blood on the strip (it gives you a msg) and you have 30 seconds to add more. Strps can be costly so these two features are awesome, for me When I was diagnosed I checked fasting, bf meals, and 2 hrs after meals. Mine have been decent though it took a couple of weeks and I now only check fasting and 2 hrs after supper, per my Dr. Where I live, in Canada, the meter is free with a prescription for strips and lancets from the Dr. I hope this helps.

You can generally get free meters with strips online. Google "free blood glucose meter" and sign up to some. You'll get a few strips too so u can decide which u like best

The trouble with buying a meter is the cost of the strips ,the cheapest strips are with the codefree meter which can be bought on Amazon or from the company

Hi I was diagnosed with type 2 three weeks ago, and like you told no need to test. I decided on a codefree meter this week as the strips and lancets are the cheapest I could find.
