Hi All .

As animal insulin isnt used as much nowadays .

I am curious to know 'why' ? you may have changed from animal insulin - onto another type of insulin

Many used to use animal insulin in the past - now so fewer people use it .

Anna .

Hello

Animal insulin was considered to be dirty insulin when I was a kid. The 'new' human insulin as they called it, was a lot cleaner and reliable.
I changed from it as everyone was made to apart from this who flatly refused. The risk of less hypo awareness was a concern then, but that said, trying to stabilise a very un stable insulin was worse.

I am happy I changed at that time. I didn't think they even still made animal insulin!

Quick google turned up the following:

It was recommended by my diabetes team that I should change from animal to human insulin, likewise when changing from human to analogue insulin.

Same as Nigel... recommended by consultant

Interesting - do you both [nigel/robert] favour and prefer the change ?
Feel better for the change ?

Anna.

Yes I do Anna, basal/bolus gives you a greater flexibility to eat when and what you want without having to stick to strict meal times and snacking in-between, now I'm reasonably well controlled I have much much fewer high's and low's compared to what I experienced on animal and human insulin's.

As far as I can remember I wasn't given a choice

I was quite happy on animal insulin. 2 shots a day and a fixed diet was straightforward.
Actually, more like Lorna, I wasn't given a choice - just handed a vial of Actrapid and NPH and told to take those.

when I changed there was no choice your diabetic team controlled your condition and that was what happened. I put on lots of weight and had nothing but problems from then for years. eventually I cried with my diabetologist having almost lost my driving license and he agreed to put me back. hypo signs came back. I am now on apidra which I love,
