Hi,
I will try to keep this short. I have Lupus, sticky blood and lots of other problems, hypothyroid, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, Coeliac it goes on.
I have been having increasingly high sugars after eating (I also have been on steroids fot 9 years) They are slowly getting higher and higher but... my hba1c is not high. The highest blood sugar I have had is 14.8 but my GP thinks I am possibly Diabetic but definately glucose intolerant. After eating(I try to eat a healthy diet, I am a retired nurse so do understand Diabetes basics. I feel so drowsy, I couldn't drive after eating. Sugar levels do return to normal after a period of time --anything from 2-4 hours after eating. Diabetes is very prevalent in my family, grandma, great aunt x 2 cousin, niece. I don't want anything else wrong with me but this worries me. Any thoughts?

Well like your doctor says - possibly diabetic I would think? Have they done a glucose tolerance test?

Also you could have a look on the diet forums here, for more ideas to further improve your diet.

I got the drowsiness after eating, when I had high blood sugar. It came on very suddenly, it was very odd. It's stopped now my diabetes is better controlled.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, yes some GTT's fall into glucose intolerance, some are normal. Since having lupus I find nothing is straight forward, I do feel so tired all the while but have 4 illnesses that cause that without diabetes so I just struggle on.

A very interesting article, I have thought for a long time that my symptoms say Diabetes but my Hba1c say no. My poor Gp is so supportive and tried me on metformin but it gave me dreadful diarrhoea and I could not tolerate it, its a shame as I am very over weight, not very mobile and 9 years of steroids don't help, he wanted second opinion but I have had third and fourth and they all say hba1c normal so nothing wrong. I think the last HBA1c was 6.5. I am anaemic and have low ferritin levels, also had very low platelets, also have blood in wee for many years kidney and liver function ok at present but i am a wreck !!!
Thanks for the input. I find the relationship of illnesses facinating and I definately have a concoction of them intertwined.

Hi Val,

It's amazing how many things can skew your HBA1c results. I remember a poster here before who couldn't understand why the HBA1c was low and yet their sugars did not reflect the result. It was anemia that was causing the difference.
You could print off the article and see if your GP, (who sounds a good bloke) could identify something there.

Take care.

Thanks another bit of useful information. I read non diabetic test should be less than 6.7 after two hours. I just tested mine as its about 2 1/2hours since I ate. blood sugar, 9.1 ???

there is another test that can be done to check hba1c if you have anemia, as the convetional test often gives a false low reading.
I will find out the name of the test for and post it later.
btw I have S.L.E myself which often causes anemia and my HBA1C 2 weeks ago was 4.4 not sure if its correct bt I hope it is.
also I was diagnosed with a HBA1C of just 5 .6 or something like that but but when I had the GTT the results were in the diabetic range.
