Why do us men lose our sex drive? - Anonymous Question

My limited understanding of it is that the autonomic nervous system is damaged by high blood sugar. The autonomic nervous system is the one that deals with heart beat, breathing, sexual sensation etc.

You also damage the motor and sensory nervous systems which reveal themselves as pain, numbness etc.
 
In his book Life Without Bread Dr Wolfgang Lutz explains how diabetes is the result of hormonal imbalance.
Hormones fall into two groups, anabolic and catabolic. The body tries to keep these two hormone categories in balance. When one part is out, another part will compensate. Imagine a pair of scales with anabolic on one side and catabolic on the other
This can happen in two ways

A decrease in an anabolic/catabolic hormone will be dealt with by the body in one of two ways. Either an increase in a different anabolic/catabolic hormone, or a decrease in a catabolic/anabolic hormone. The reverse of course for an increase.

Since your sex drive is hormone-led this may be affected.

The older I get and the longer I've worked as a Med Sec the more I think many illnesses can be attributed to hormonal imbalance of one sort or another. Our body is literally a clock, all the organs - heart, lungs, liver, spleen, pancreas, etc are like the different sized cogs we'd find in any old fashioned clock. Just as those cogs are different sizes and move around in synchronisation with each other, so do our organs move in tandem because of the hormones they release. When one hormone in one organ is a little bit off balance it has a knock on effect on all the other organs and their hormones. When we're short of one hormone, others will try to produce more to compensate for them - to keep us 'ticking'. Eventually, we become like an old clock that is running slow, losing time. Also each of our 'cogs' - organs is gradually eroded and damaged because of the extra stress on them.

This is why a woman's health can often deteriorate during the menopause years - it's not just about the ovaries and the womb, it affects the WHOLE body and it's why we develop things like diabetes, thyroid probs, depression, cancer etc. Same goes for men and their hormones too.

Yet our poor old hormones are often not taken seriously and we tend to use the term 'hormonal' with derision rather than with the sympathy it deserves.

I really wish more research would be done into the Endocrine system and its relation to the illnesses we tend to take for granted as being just 'part of life'. I think a lot could be avoided if we had a 'hormone tune up service'.

I would largely agree, except for Dr Lutz's warning about 'most endocrinologists.'

In his own words
Yet most endocrinologists…do not recognize the fact that [grain] consumption is that major dietary source of hormonal imbalance.” Life Without Bread, Christian Allan, PhD and Wolfgang Lutz, MD, Keats Publishing, 2000, p. 21 and 181.

Matt Stone describes him thus "the most successful doctor in history at preventing heart disease was Broda O. Barnes, a huge proponent of saturated fat consumption who ate bacon and eggs with full-fat milk for breakfast every day."

Dr Barnes was the clever person who came up with the idea of testing basal body temperatures to diagnose hypothyroidism.

Patients with Diabetes have various side effects from their condition. One set of problems are circulatory including endothelial dysfunction which impacts on a man's ability to obtain and sustain an erection. You will often have heard of the term Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and the causes of this can be psychosomatic (performance anxiety). Up to 3/4 of men with some form of Diabetes will experience a degree of ED over the course of their life. There are various causes including as I mentioned before psychomatic, but the causes prevelent in Diabetic patients are based around nerve, muscle and blood vessel functions. Many common medications such as blood pressure drugs can produce ED and many patients suffer concomitantly from Diabetes and Hypertension. There are various products on the market to treat ED such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. Some diabetics find Levitra to be more effective than the other products. You should discuss any erectile difficulties with your GP (Doctor) as they may be able to obtain samples and can also check that their is no problem taking the drug at the same time as other medications you may be on (for example certain heart medications can interact with these drugs with serious consequences). Worries me a bit that we suddenly have a series of anonymous questions, after years of having none, with one set of questions around "why do us MEN have sex problems", with a simultaneous set of questions around vaginal issues and another on general sex problems. Can't be coincidence, but questions are apparently from a man and a woman. Perhaps anonymous can clarify
 

I responded to some of the anonymous questions the other day and as an experiment I clicked on the handle (albeit "Anonymous question") and all three had the same time as last visited implying they were the same person.

That's not necessarily wrong but it might explain why there seemed to be a lot. I suppose it could be a shy person although since we all use handles I wonder just how anonymous you want to be.
 
I just posted about this elsewhere. beiong honest, I'm not quite sure why we need this option, it's not as if anyone knows who we are in cyberspace! *looks around nervously *
