Hello everyone, I was diagnosed with type 3C diabetes (Essentially treated exactly the same way and is type 1 diabetes, just from external damage to the pancreas) on the 7th October 2024 so am still pretty new to this.

Around about 7 days ago the toe next to my little toe on my left foot was very itchy in the night, so I itched it, but when I looked in the morning I had somehow torn a pretty big hole across the toe in the skin.

I left it for 5 days to see how it healed, but my toe turned purple and the little toe next to it also started to go purple.

My GP was great and told me to come straight along for an emergency appointment. Long story short I have been put on the highest dose of flucloxacillin and have to go back on Friday for the nurse to see if it is healing.

I am quite worried as this is the first thing to do with my feet that has happened since my diagnosis, and I saw and old school friend the other month who had to have his toe amputated due to his diabetes.

With the antibiotics should my toe heal normally? I am really frightened something bad will happen so any support is much appreciated.

Hi @conanthewarrior

I can understand how worrying this can be for you, I don’t think anyone can predict how long or if your toe will heal, but be reassured you’ve done the right thing by getting it seen to. How are is BG? It will probably help you to keep your BG in range as much as possible. High BG makes it more difficult for our bodies to heal wounds & sickness.

Glad they are keeping an eye on you and hopefully by Friday there will be some improvement

My BG is actually very good, I am around 80% in range according to my freestyle Libre 2. The only strange thing is the past few days I keep having hypos a few times a day, usually I get them once in a blue moon. My BG is not high so hopefully that will help the wound heal, it does look a little better today.
Me too, the Dr was very good and proper on it to make sure it was followed up on, I will update on Friday how the appointment goes.

My toes have always had relatively little room between, with the exception of the big toes. Consequently I have always been prone to itchy feet. As a result I keep athlete's foot powder next to the bed, which really helps. I hope yours continues to heal.

I went to my appointment to see how it was healing, I thought it had improved but the Dr did not.
She took me to the nurses in the surgery who put a dressing on my toe, and I have to go back there next Wednesday to see how it is healing.
The purpleness of my little toe has gone, and also the majority of it on the toe next too it.
It still has the scab from the cut on it, but apart from that I feel happy that it is healing, I just think the Dr is being extra careful where I am diabetic.
