Zero insulin?

Hi all,
I've been type 1 diabetic for about four years now. I used to do about 6hrs of exercise a week until last year when I stepped it up to between 6 and 10 to start competing in triathlon. This year I've moved onto longer distance racing and train between 7 - 14hrs. However, I used take about 4, 4, 7 novo and 18 levemir but recently I've been 0, 0, 4 and 10. It's obviously the training but this week it's bounced back towards past figures. Are there any other athlete type out there who this has happened to?
I'm not worried about it but the zero insulin things a bit odd?
Cheers,
Rick.

I don't do as much exercise as you, but I know that when I do do quite a lot (esp when it's a day's worth, like a long hike), then my insulin needs drop quite a bit and often I find myself fighting a hypo-battle because I keep dropping unless I keep eating!

Sounds like a great way to reduce your needs, and I wouldn't be worried about it, provided you are testing regularly and keeping your BG within normal ranges.... OBviously your basal insulin deals with your basic metabolic needs and so won't drop off to the same extent as your basal!

Well done (hmmm, maybe I should get some more exercise!!)

Hi Rick

I do quite a bit of exercise (although not as much as you!) and I quite often find that I don't need any insulin. Some days I might only have 2/3 units Novorapid total and then my 4 units Levemir.

Claire, how do manage to use such low quantities of insulin, I find that amazing for some one who, I assume, has been diabetic for a while?

PS - thank you Dennis I've never found the site before.

Hi Rick

Actually I haven't been diabetic for that long - diagnosed in August - so I'm probably still in honeymoon. Also it depends what I eat - if I have quite a low carb day then I hardly need anything, but if I have lots of fruit then obviously I need more

I'm doing a blog on the food forum at the moment looking at how a raw vegan diet affects my BS/insulin needs, if you're interested. I'm listing everyday what I eat, what exercise I am doing and what insulin I am needing.

I'm only two weeks into eating that way but I have to say I have LOADS more energy for exercise than I did before, even though I used to eat lots and lots of starchy carbs like everyone recommends. But of course my exercise levels are nowhere near as high as yours

I think that's great for you Rick! It means that most of the time your background insulin does its work and you can avoid the other. You make me wanna do more sport!

Erroneous, that's a great reply, you know, I never gave my Levemir a thought; in the day to day management of my blood gluscose I suppose it's a bit of an after-thought beyond my reading when I wake up. Thanks for kicking my brain awake.
