Alot.
So my bloods have been high for the last few days 18-28 depending on time of day and what I'm doing.

Today I woke with a reading of 17. After 14 units of Lantus.

Throught out the day I have limited my carb In take and raised my Humlog to see if I can bring it down.
NOTHING!

Come home. Changed my Humlog. Slept (starting to feel really tired). After my three hour nap. I woke, took my bloods 17 again. Had 4 units. Glass of water and a shower. Took my bloods again and I've gone up to 19.

Anyone got any advise?

Is this just recently or have you had lower levels.

I would say that you ned to up your levimir again, however you do not say whether you have quick acting insulin for meals.

Have you tested your ketones?

Are you ill or becoming ill? My sugars tend to rise when I am getting a cold in which case I raise my basal (although I am on a pump is this is easy to do). In your case you may try raising your basal by a couple of units to see if this helps. However you should continue to do plenty of testing to watch for hypos.

If you can't get them down or you have high ketones then I would suggest seeing your GP tomorrow or visiting A&E tonight (if you have high ketones and high blood sugar as this may be a sign of ketoacidosis).

I haven't had low's for a while.
I'm on Lantus for long lasting and Humlog for fast acting.

Hi,

Could be many reasons. Lots of things to consider.

Have you checked that your Lantus is OK? - i.e. Not out of date? Not cloudy? That it has been stored properly and not got too hot? That you are using a new needle at each injection? Do you need to up your Lantus by a unit or two? Do you think you are fighting an infection? Can you check for ketones? If ketones are high seek medical advice immediately - link to info on ketones. If your high sugar levels persist please seek medical advice.

Ketones are 0.2.

I had a could about 3 weeks again so don't think that is still in me system.

I'm at 18 now. That two hours after having my fast acting. So it's starting to come down but not as quick as I'd like.

Lowest was 15.8.

I've tested with another machine in case it was the machine. It wasn't. Also had my partner test. 5.9 so it isn't the machine.

Just worried now.

Would you be able to pop along to A&E with your partner tonight?

Try a new cartridge of Lantus? I think you said you'd changed your Humalog cartridge. I actually had a faulty pen recently and wasn't getting consistent doses of basal. Once I got a new pen, things went back to normal. I've also had a bad batch of insulin in the past. Could you try using a cartridge from a different box of both your Lantus and Humalog?

Changed both. So hoping that helps. :)

We have decide to test through the night and see what numbers look like.

If no change. Good Friday at A&E it is. :-(

Woke this morning to a reading of ten. :) so going the right way.

Don't know if this has anything to do with it but I have an e-cig. Stopped using that and BINGO! Blood levels falling.

Interesting to see if anyone has had similar issues with e-cigs.

Feel amazing. It's crazy how just lowering by 10 can make you feel on too of the world.

Just need to keep on it. :)

These are all things you have probably thought of, but just in case it should happen again, here are some suggestions:

Check your insulin pen. If I have any doubts I try squirting two units into the sink to see if anything comes out.

Check the use by date of the insulin. Also, how long has it spent out of the fridge? After a couple of months at room temperature it may not work as well ( I don't know this for sure but it might be worth thinking about if everything else is accounted for)

Have you put the right insulin in the right pen? I once had three days of massive hypos at night followed by staggering highs the rest of the day. Turned out I had filled my basal pen with bolus insulin.

If you have been running highs for days, and assuming you take a correction dose every time you see a high reading, then it's much more likely that there is something wrong with your quick acting insulin rather than your Lantus. Eg the insulin has gone off, or the pen is faulty, or you loaded it with Lantus by mistake. Or you are injecting into really bad areas of skin with hyperlipotrohy (fatty skin patches). The other cause could be serious illness but you have ruled that out.

Change everything on the pen including insulin from a different cartridge in a different, brand new packet. Use a spare pen if you have one. Pens are pretty reliable, it's much more likely the insulin that would fail.

Do 2 hour and 4 hour tests after doing a correction with quick acting insulin and if it hasn't come down significantly, the cause is your QA insulin or pen. Generally you are not going to get sustained highs of 18 for days just from failure of your basal alone.

So after new Lantus and Humlog. No e-cig and a low carb day I've got a six.

Over the moon. Now just need to keep it up.

Thank you everybody for the helpful and advise. Much appreciated.
