    Covid-19, Diabetes and Obesity, Links??

I'm 61 and I was diagnosed T2, 34 years ago, whilst not being overweight. In recent years, I did have some weight issues but, having gone low-carb, am back at my pre-diabetes weight. I fell foul of Covid-19 at the end of March. The cough, a mild temperature, crackly and sore chest whilst...

    Finger Pricks

Been injecting for 30 years, finally got a bit of a clue about Diabetes, it helped enormously by going low carb. I inject before eating but base my injection dose on what my blood test result was and what I'm about to eat. I've always been advised to test two hours after eating and try to ensure...

    Unsupportive Spouse

Time to sit down and have the honest talk, otherwise this will be no good for you or your relationship. I get the idea that your partner may have issues regarding Diabetes, be it a fear of needles, or something far deeper. When I was diagnosed in 1986, my Irish family members in Donegal refused...

    Phobia of needles

I too had a phobia regarding needles but took the plunge when realising that the medication that I was on was no longer working (about 18 mths after diagnosis). I spoke to my consultant and showed him that I was perfectly capable of drawing up the Insulin into a syringe from the vial, without it...

    Unsupportive Spouse

An update on this post. I have now lost a total of 33 Kilos and, again fully supported by my wife who I met nearly 30 yrs ago, can now jog around my large local park and am on a 1/3rd of my old insulin dose. I am also now on a ridiculously low level of anti-depressants and am loving life. I hope...

Newly diagnosed with type 2 and feeling unwell

I would much rather do what I did, got my weight, and fitness, sorted, no longer suffer with Sleep Apnoea. Am also on a third of my previous Insulin intake.

Newly diagnosed with type 2 and feeling unwell

Hi Mike, Can I ask if you are noticeably overweight? It's not any sort of dig, more a question to find out facts. I was diagnosed T2 30+ years ago. I went down the route of Metformin but found the damned stuff so disagreeable with me (mood, fatigue etc, that I chose to get off it. I was...

    ‘Baileys’ alternative

If the makers of Bailey's could ever come up with a sugar free diet version, along the lines of diet coke (yes, I know alcohol contains calories but the sugar levels could still be massively reduced), they'd be on a winner. I love the stuff (my sweet tooth only developed after I was diagnosed 32...

    Advice on injecting in public

They are utter neanderthals. They need someone to sit down and seriously educate them about Diabetes. We all need sugar, we just have to control our intake. Many of us need insulin, whether T1 or T2. Someone needs to sit down with them and explain how it all works, and the best person is...

    Flu Jabs

I've been getting the jab for as long as I can remember, having started on Insulin 30 years ago. In my pre-Diabetic days, I had flu twice, the first nearly killed me as a child, the second had me unconscious for 72 hours when I was around 23. Everyone, who is entitled to the flu jab should get...

    Type 2 Metformin side effects

I struggled with Metformin and Cholopropamide 30 years ago. The latter was on a maximum dose and I couldn't take anymore. The Metformin affected me mentally. I became extremely angry and short tempered, to the point where I'll admit that I was potentially dangerous. I couldn't stand the stuff...

Glycogen Depletion = Fat Store Usage + Glucose Spike?

I don't know any of the fancy stuff. However, I took up jogging earlier this year aged 59. I did the natural thing of not taking insulin before I went out, thinking that it would cause a hypo when I used up my energy reserves. Of course that was complete BS and I found that a) my running was...

Horrified I Have Put Weight On Is It The Bacon

The biggest favour you can do for yourself is to go Low Carb. The second biggest, and possibly the most effective, is never to buy any processed food again. Foods listed as "healthy" often have all the fat removed and replaced with sugar, the one thing guaranteed to mess up Diabetics. Bin all...

    Injection Sites

I inject 5 times a day, 3 Novo Rapid, 1 Lantus and 1 Liraglutide. I work down the left one day and the right the next. I also rotate the injection points in each area, so that I never use the same spot twice in 3 days. I have no lumps, bumps etc. I get the occasion bruise but that's just from...

    Low Carb On A Budget?

Yes it is. It just needs a little effort, such as learning how to cook, avoiding pre-packed or processed food, and making an effort. Once you master it, or get a sense of what you should be doing, it's amazing how much money you can save by ditching all pre-made supermarket/shop goods and...

    Telling People You're Diabetic

When I was diagnosed as a T2, despite never having been overweight, it took me an age to find out that T1 and T2 was rampant throughout my family history. My family are Irish, as am I. The older ones from the countryside areas, where parish priests controlled every part of daily life, seemed to...

Husband Prescribed Wrong Insulin, V Worried & Confused

Hi Alice, This is interesting stuff. I'm a T2, diagnosed when I was 28 and never overweight. 30 years of mismanagement (related to old style Diabetes Clinic teaching, which hated Low-Carb and Keto diets, along with my own Depression, hatred of needles and losing the will to live) led me to blow...

    Type 1 Dvla Licence Renewal

I'm lucky in the sense that my Consultant Annual Appt is usually in the 6 mths or so before I renew my licence. When I fill the forms in, they get the details of my consultant, my optician and my GP's practice. I've never had a problem renewing my licence, despite being on Insulin etc for 28 years+.

I use my local council's service in Wandsworth. I just call their disposal group and they come and collect my sharps bin and leave a replacement.

Funny, if it wasn't so stupid.

My Insulins and Liraglutide are on a when I need more basis, as are my blood testing strips, as I find them to be unpredictable. All my other stuff is on a two month supply basis. I don't know how anyone can put up with Metformin. I hated the stuff and the radical mood swings it caused me. The...
