Well. I'm no longer 'able' to eat the some of the things I love without consequences, so I suppose that is a bit of a disability. I think I'll live (for a while anyway). How about you?

No not for just Diabetes.
But if you have some problem that is caused by your Diabetes then that may be different if that means you are unable to work because of it.

No I don't think so not heard anyone here say they have been classified as disabled just because of diabetes maybe if you had other medical problems that restricted you in any way and you could not work because of it

You are, however, entitled to free prescriptions. (In England, not sure about anywhere else)
One is only entitled to free prescriptions in England and Wales if one is taking diabetes medication. Those on Metformin therefore qualify. Anyone on diet and exercise alone does not.

No you arnt disabled with a diabetes diagnosis .
However if ? you have any other medical conditions as well ?
Your own GP can advise you on these .

Diabetes diagnosis alone isnt disabling but does need careful handling to
prevent any complications arising .

Yes, sorry I should have qualified my remark. I understood the OP is on Metformin though.

Interesting - my DN volunteered the information (after agreeing no medication) that Viagra or similar was now free as a diabetic.

For employment purposes, you may meet the definition of disability under the Equality Act (which replaced the Disability Discrimination Act), as this considers how your illness would affect you if you weren't medicated. So a T1 on insulin would definitely be disabled (probably dead) whereas a diet only controlled T2 may not. I'm on insulin and have always considered myself disabled for the purposes of disability discrimination, gives me extra protection so no downside really. I haven't had to use it yet - was treated pretty poorly by my former employer when pregnant and having debilitating hypos, but they sorted it out once I had raised it to the relevant level of management, I suppose because it was also pregnancy related that really upped the ante.

No is the simple answer. IMHO
I see from your profile that you are probably not likely to do the following:-
  • Armed forces
  • Fire service
  • Ambulance service
  • Prison service
  • Airline pilots and Airline Cabin crew
  • Air traffic control
  • Offshore work
You could be excluded if you were type I. It's worth mentioning to your co directors or at least the MD, unless of course you are the MD.
