ok here goes I have diabetes type2 controlled by diet and excercise for less than 6 months and im quite concered about my bg.
for the last week it has has been consistanly between 11 to 15.
so today I phoned the practice nurse at my doctors surgery she said she would speak to the diabetic specialist gp in my practice and phone me back.
she called me back 2 hours later and said the doctor said my diabetes is not very well controlled and to to tighten up my diet and loose weight and basically its all my fault for unhealthy lifestyle.
now I am about 1 stone overweight but I eat a healthy reduced carb diet and excercise alot and I was quite insulted by her attitude.
anyway I tryed to tell her that all I had eaten today was one slice of wholemeal toast as I didnt feel very well and didnt feel like eating and that my bg was still increasing she then went onto to give me a lecture about how I should not be testing so much.
anyway my question is should I worried about these bg levels ranging between 11 to 15.
I have asked the doctor about medication and he very rudely states that meds should not be issued to correct an unhealthy lifestyle but I do excercise and I have lost some weight although I still have one stone to loose.
I think my GP is just thinks all type 2 have caused diabetes themselves and should control it themselves through diet and excercise but Im worried that I might need meds and he wont give me them.
to be honest im terriefied I think my bgs are too high but have hit a brick wall with my gp.

Pizza (makes my BG go through the roof), Pasta & potatoes.
Hi Loise,

NO. You are not over reacting.

Some people are fortunate to control with diet and excercise but not all of us are. I know many type 2's taking medication who eat low carb, excercise, don't carry weight and still have high Blood sugar levels.

You must go and see your doctor and talk to him about this. Is there any other doctors at the practice you can speak to?

Honestly, sometimes Ijust despair at the so-called experts who are supposedto trust with our health. |do hope you get to see a sympathetic (sensible) doctor soon.

Hello Louise :)

Sorry to hear that you are still having such problems. With all the other health issues you have I am disgusted that you are being treated by your doctor and nurse in this way.

You are right that those numbers are NOT good and I would say that you NOT over-reacting. Are you keeping a food diary and marking against the meals the meter readings? If not then start doing it so that you have some kind of evidence to take with you when you eventually see someone as it will help them to help you.

I think I remember correctly that you eventually went to the diabetes clinic at your local hospital which is where you were given meter, strips etc. If that is so I would advise you to ring the secretary at the diabetes clinic at the hospital on the next working day and tell her about the problems you are having and ask if you can be seen there. My hospital clinic will always see me if I ring and I have elected to have my ongoing diabetic care undertaken there as my local surgery are still back in the Ark – sounds a bit like yours!! You need to be seen by an expert not someone who has little interest and perhaps drew the short straw to run the local clinic.

Whether you go to the hospital diabetes clinic or your own doctor and given the problems you have, I would recommend that you take someone who cares about you with you when you go and preferably someone strong who will be there for you. For obvious reasons a witness always makes people behave better.

synonym,
I didnt get a meter from the hospotal clinic I think you are confusing me with someone else.
but I have no choice in which diabetic clininc I attend its held at my gp practice and I have no choice but to see one specific doctor the so called diabetic specailist who holds the clinic, if I try to see another gp regarding diabetes they just teell me to go nad make an appointment to discuss it with this so called diabetic specialist doctor,
I dont mean to sound paranoid but im only 28, I dont have high cholestral its 4.1 and I dont have high blood pressure and I am only 1 stone overweight and with th sden increase in my bg in the last few eeks im beginning to think that I might not even be type 2 after all maybe im type 1 my dad had type 1

You clearly need something inside you as how you feel could just indicate lack of food and of course stress also plays a part in BG levels.

Hi

You said that you were not feelign well? If you are not well and have some sort of infection that can send your BG haywire? What are your readigns normally like. High BG can make youfeel ill but being ill can give you high readings.

Your doctor sounds dreadful, I know you said it is a new doctor but if this carries on can you change practices? however specialist he is if he if he is not approachable then he is no good for you. Heavens above you know you had a problem that's why you asked for advice, not to be told that it was your fault, adn go away

As a new diaebtic you need help and support not a big stick, and 1 stone overwight night not be good, but it is not drastic like some of us. (me of course)

Hi louiseb,

You seem to be getting a bad deal with this "specialist diabetes dr".
Ask for a double appointment, write down all your concerns and worries and when you get to see him be assertive. Go through everything on your list and write down his answers. Explain how you feel about the advice you have been given, how you want to be pro-active in controlling your diabetes and how you find the dismissive attitude of the surgery very upsetting. Ask him to explain to you how he suggests you control your blood sugars as, to date, you are doing everything right and nothing is happening.
You are probably just "another diabetic" to him but he needs to realize that an individual approach is all you are asking for as you are motivated to change things but seem to have hit a brick wall. I would then ask to see and Endocrinologist and I would be surprised if this is denied to you as this is your right, a second opinion.
If you find assertion difficult here is a tip, imagine that he is sitting there in his underwear. He is a Dr. and not a God.

Hope this helps,

Catherine.

You are not overreacting, already on metformin and about a month ago saw GP about other conditions and she asked in passing what my sugars were doing. I said I was regularly getting readings of 9-10mmol/L on waking and often 15-18 during the day. She immediately increased my metformin to three a day which I could not tolerate so two weeks ago she started me on gliclazide once daily. I have put on wieght due to other medication I take which has also been increased, this maybe to blame for the increase BG.

People on diet and exercise or medication do in all liklihood increase up, diabetes by its nature is progressive although with very strict self control you maybe able to hold off this day. Everyone is different and so many will find themselves increasing up the scale of treatment and should not be made to feel bad because of it.
Take care
Jo
