I was always told that my two sons would likely NOT be Type 1 Diabetic, I was diagnosed at age 8 and my sons are now 24 and 20 years old both Diabetes Free.

I was also always told my Grandchildren would likely have Type 1 Diabetes, my first Grandchild a girl is due in 2 weeks.

Can anyone tell me the likelihood that my Granddaughter could be a Juvenile Onset TD1 at some point?

Grandparents can pass it on. Your granddaughter will have a family history of type 1 that will increases her risk of type 1 compared to the general population (which is 1/100) by doubling it (2/100).

I think the idea that it skips a generation is something like a urban myth. Obviously it does skip a generation for some families. But it's not actually statistically more likely. The risk of getting type 1 if you have a first degree relative (parent or sibling) is 8 to 15 times higher (15/100). So much more likely that your sons would get it, yet that haven't, so there's no reason to assume your granddaughter will. Something like 7% of children diagnosed with type 1 have a father with type 1, 4% have a second degree relative (grandparent/aunt/uncle) with type 1.

Both your sons and your granddaughter, when she is over 3, will be eligible for trialnet testing to see if they have antibodies to assess their type 1 risk - http://www.bristol.ac.uk/media-library/sites/clinical-sciences/migrated/documents/factsheet.pdf
