I've been with my type one diabetes for about two months now. At times I'm slowly getting used to it and at other times I'm just in complete denial/breakdown.

On the whole my readings are good; I was at the specialist today for a check up and other than one or two, my "scores" were green all across the board.

Now the reason I post this is a little worry I have around the corner. For a while one of my friends has planned some drinks for his birthday at a bar and I'm just concerned with how it will go and certainly don't want to be overthinking about it to ruin my time.

It's a cocktail bar and I know most cocktails are heavy in sugar so what do people recommend?

I plan to take my insulin with breakfast and lunch as normal; and then after a bit of drinking I'll snack with another dose of insulin. Then get the 24hr one in and then get a takeaway on the way home to combat any "come down" /hypo?

The sugary mixers that come in most cocktails are a pest.
I have approached them in one of two ways
- avoid the ones with sugary mixers so go for something like martini or a long island iced tea made with diet coke
- take insulin for the sugar as you drink them

I have tried postponing my insulin until I get a snack but my BG goes way too high and I am not able to enjoy the evening.

I hope you find your way round this problem and have a great night.

why can't everyone get on........
hi there:)
I avoid "actual" cocktails and stick with either Gin and slimline tonic or rum and diet coke
when it comes to shots -- tequila is always a winner -- forget the "sourz"
and don't take part in pitchers of cocktails -- mostly sugar !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, have you got a friend on this "adventure" you really get on with & wouldn't mind them nagging you to check your blood every 2 hours....? Cocktails. (According to my wife.) are meant to be a slow sipper conversation piece..? Not a "bender".
Lol, I've experimented. (Like you do!) & even as a sipper with the classic cocktail it's screwed me up...
I've felt "cheap" in the morning.. Wishing I'd gone "upmarket" for the voddy & Diet Coke.... ;)

Whiskey sour, dirty martini, espresso martini - if the bartenders are worth their salt (and they should be in a cocktail bar) speak to them they should be able to make you something amazing without sugars or syrups- enjoy the occasion have fun and remember to keep checking your bloods and everything in moderation:)
