Father suffering from neuropathy in his feet

My father has been a type 2 for the past 16 years. His control is probably no better than adequate and over the past couple of years he has been suffering from neuropathy in his feet. It has got progressively worse to the point where he is in severe pain at times. He used to drink himself insensible at night to ensure a good night's rest, but i do not believe this is working to the extent it was. He has been trying some kind of chilli rub on his feet but to no effect.

What do others do when they have neuropathy? Is there a way to successfully manage the pain? Can it only get worse or can it get better?

Thank you for any and all replies.

Hope this helps.

I had severe pains in feet and hands pre-diagnosis as diabetic. Pains were diagnosed as neuropathy. To manage my diabetes I went low carb. Wonderful my pains have gone. Feels like a miracle but all to do with diet.
