Mollie, High Levels of insulin cause your body to go into fat storage mode. This isn't your partners exercise level. He will need to reduce his food intake to stop the weight increase and that will then allow for less insulin.
@Andrew Colvin .....that's interesting to know...so does that mean that if he is having more insulin than his body can use for the food that he consumes then the fat storage mode kicks in...
Just to complete the picture in terms of medication cocktail he is currently on Novamix 30 taking 28 units with his lunchtime meal (he doesn't get up till late or have breakfast) and another 28 units with his evening meal at about 6pm......his other diabetic medication is now Metformin 2000mg and Forxiga 10mg (started yesterday)...the gliclazide has been dropped now he is starting Forxiga...
...he changed to Novamix 30 from Humulin 1 towards the end of April and has been on the same dose of 28 units since 21st May...he has recently (probably since beginning of June or could be before) been eating less and trying to 'diet'..he will just have salad for tea with whatever meat or fish I am cooking....he has not had any potatoes for some weeks...
....in terms of carbs he will have a bowl of porridge (some evenings but not all) and will also eat a small yoghurt or a banana but is certainly not eating to excess...
So just to recap on your comment....could it be that he is not now eating enough to utilise the amount of insulin that he is taking....and that the excess insulin is causing his body to go into fat storage mode...
...I knew that your body can go into starvation mode if you don't eat enough for what you need and that basically it will store as fat for a later date...am guessing this is the same....my partner often just says 'I will just not eat' thinking this is a way of losing weight ...I have tried to explain that this is not a good idea and reasons why but is difficult as he won't see it that way...
So the fact is that he has reduced his food intake but I can't see that it will be suggested by anyone that the amount of insulin he is taking is now too much and that it will ever be reduced from its current level....I possibly mistakenly thought that given his body weight the insulin would be insufficient ....this is just getting so confusing....feel like I started juggling with three balls and now have ten!!
Just one final point to throw in the mix....could the timing of the insulin be an issue....based on his routine there is sometimes less than 6 hours between the two doses meaning that he has an overlap plus also a gap rather than two evenly spaced ones....how much will this matter or affect the outcome...
Any further thoughts on this will be welcomed......am just so confused....
