Hello, In the last week of August I got a severe dose of viral gastroenteritis. I got so sick that I couldn't even face calling an ambulance and handling all the people and the speaking and the stuff and the hospital and the people and the talking...... all I wanted to do was lie there between the incessant trips to the toilet. I knew I needed to be in hospital but I just couldn't bear the idea, I couldn't even see how I'd make it there in an ambulance without bringing my toilet with me! I spent 48hrs thinking I was going to die, it was that bad. I was only semi-conscious most of the time, and couldn't see straight - literally. I knew what I was meant to do with my insulin - keeping doing the lantus, eat a biscuit here or there just to get some novorapid in - but I could barely see the pens/needles, my eyes were crossing and spinning all over the place, like when you're super-drunk. I only got to +1 ketones (I never go higher than that, thank God - I still make some insulin) but most of the time I couldn't actually produce any urine to test - and that was the big problem, how dehydrated I got for 48hrs solid, when I just couldn't stomach drinking because it made me so nauseous. Just little sips here and there. But, having had this a few times when I was younger and not diabetic, I just thought I'd get better soon, like before. I'm now into my 7th week of feeling awful and I've had 4 or 5 weeks off work, I can't remember now. I no longer have diarrhoea but I can't eat much or drink coffee, I can't do anything physical, I feel very weak and tired and sometimes my bowel hurts all the way up to my stomach, my abdomen swells up, I sometimes get breathless, I feel completely dreadful and have cramps. I also had 2x 3-day long migraines during the first 2-3wks of it. I had blood tests done 2wks ago and they showed a high lymphocyte count meaning I'm still fighting the virus. I am back at work now and thought things were getting onto a level but this week it's all got worse again and I felt so bad yesterday that I had to go home from work after 3hrs. Has anyone else had this happen to them and does anyone have any advice? Sugars are actually fine, thank God, but I can't eat much then I finally crack because I want a big meal, and overdo it, which probably isn't helping my bowel recover but I can't help it. It's been such a big shock, I never imagined it would take so long to recover. I've got chronic fatigue syndrome as well so this situation is just no good. Does anyone have any really useful knowledge or advice? Is there anything natural I can drink, or eat, to help it go away? moonstone
