It will mean changing your way of life permanently if you want to avoid the problems of diabetes, but you get to eat the good things rather than the stodgy fill you up foods. That means - for instance, lunch could be steak, mushrooms and tomato with coleslaw and green salad, but not the chips. There are worse things in life.
