Just visited an 88 year old T2 who has been admitted for "investigations ".
They are doing 2 hourly finger prick blood tests (among other tests)
I was there when 3 hours after lunch he got tutted at for being 11.7.
His lunch was apple juice, chicken and leek pie, boiled potatoes, sweetcorn, upside pineapple cake with custard.
OK, he doesn't know how to make low carb choices, but the only low carb item on the menu was ham salad. And yet he was being encouraged to eat as yesterday they kept him low fat (!). They even left him 2 packs of biscuits in case he got hungry later...

I'm not surprised just saddened, again, still :arghh:

My daughter has been volunteering at Hospital nearby and because of me she is very aware of low carb non UPF diet and generally the foods diabetics must avoid and was recounting similar experience to yours. It is very sad indeed.

Dear me. If anything, it sounds as though the catering situation has deteriorated, Up until 12 years ago when I regularly visited hospitals in London, there was a daily cheese salad option at the very least.

I remember visiting my T2 dad in hospital about 11/12 years ago.
A nurse took his BGs whilst I looked on. I casually asked her what it was. The reply was, “ oh, the numbers are great.” Brilliant said I, what are they? It was according to the nurse 13.4?.? (In that range.)

I do not have diabetes
I have had on occasions had to be in hospital. Once on a diabetic ward.
I had a long conversation with my specialist.
The view from most dieticians, is it an item of food is healthy for non diabetic patients, why shouldn't it be healthy for diabetics? And the nurses are told to give cereals, toast, juice and even puddings, cake and custard.
A healthy diet for me, told many times is porridge, baked potatoes, pasta, wholemeal rice and so on.
It was found that this diet was what was causing my symptoms and my illness.
I won't eat hospital food. I get my family to bring it in.

I was doing my fasting test.
I was asked what I would like at the end of the test.
It was cereal or toast.
I refused.
I went to the cafeteria and indulged in bacon, egg, tomatoes, mushrooms.
One of the nurses queried my selection.
I asked, if she had heard of RH? Or of eating disorders? lactose intolerance?
Oh I see! She replied, but she didn't get it!
And as for dsns, omg!
