How long after meals are you hypoing?

Are you carb counting I.e adjusting your insulin to take account of the carbs you are eating?

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
Hi @Proudmumma Welcome to the forum ;)

It's quite common for insulin needs to decrease after diagnosis, so as your body becomes used to receiving insulin the stressed pancreas can kick into life again and will give out spurts of insulin, this is a temporary phase called the honeymoon period. Please speak to your diabetic nurse as soon as you can about adjusting your insulin requirements, as you are experiencing hypos it's important for you to speak to them as soon as possible.

Are you taking 10 units of novorapid before meals? If yes, its probably too much. I was put on a set dose after diagnosis (10 u for each meal) and spent a week in constant hypo :inpain:Learn carb counting and adjusting your insulin dose for the meals and you will become more in control

No 10 units of lantus and 2-4 units of rapid before a high carb meal ... I have an app to see the dietician next week and have also downloaded the carbs and cals ap..
Spoke to the diabetic nurse and I am very active so I think I am not consuming enough carbs in the morn to keep my sugars stable.

If your sugars go down it means there is too much insulin. You don't have to eat more, just reduce insulin a bit :)

I second the advice above to ask about carb counting and adjusting your insulin to match what you're about to eat. That's crucial for good control. You may have to push a little to be taught but it's well worth it. It gives you flexibilty as well as better control.

If your schedule can be variable eg if, like me, you have children you're running around behind, it's ok to eat a few extra carbs if needed (without doing a fast acting injection). I sometimes have to top up with a biscuit or whatever if my day is busier than I planned.

I agree with this. After I was diagnosed (incorrectly as type 2 as it turned out) I started on tablet medication. I nearly had to stop all meds after a couple of months because my Pancreas sprang back into life and this lasted for a year or so before my BG started to rise and rise and rise. I was then rediagnosed as type 1 and started on insulin. So just be prepared to make changes. Developing type 1 as an adult is like being on shifting sands for a year or two. But enjoy some pancreatic function whilst you still have it :)

You will find when your active after meals you need less insulin as opposed to when your not active, ask your DSN/Dietitian what you should do with regards to your bolus insulin when you know that your going to be active, better to adjust your insulin rather than eat more food which could lead to weight gain over the longer term.

You may be having too much insulin if your meals haven't many carbs... Contact your diabetic specialist/nurse with advice on adjusting how many units of your rapid insulin because it's a fast acting insulin, whereas the lantus works slower over a 24hr period. Also the weather has a lot to do with it too! I always have hypos when it's too hot! I can't take hot baths or showers because it brings one on! One thing for sure is that every day is different and never the same with the condition... Somedays you'll have a high reading even when you've been eating the right things! So frustrating at times but it gets easier :) I'm 26 and was diagnosed at just 3. And even I'm still learning haha! Everything will be fine, just stay on top of things with appointments and things and you'll be lovely! There's a Hypo awareness module thingy on here that's really helpful too! Wishing you all the best and hope things get easier for you :) x

Is it only after your breakfast or all meals? The hot weather can cause hypos as it causes the insulin to be absorbed more quickly from the injection site. After you've treated your hypo do your sugars go back to a normal level or do they rise and make you high?

It's after breakfast and lunch.... but been a lot better in the cooler weather... from having the hypo my bloods steadily go back up but often reach between 11 and 14 before the next meal :/ Dec to the most challenging thing I've had to deal with in my life after becoming five years clear from cancer this Aug and then being hit with this deffo a massive impact but I'm sure it gets easier
