Hello im not sure what happened today. Is it possible to have a hypo with no symptoms. If my bg levels go under 5 i always get symptoms but today at work I felt a little hungry so tested my levels to see if I need any insulin with my snack and my levels were 4.3 obviously I freaked out and took a glucose tablet but I felt fine. An hour later though i had the usual feelings after a hypo eg tired, moody and quiet. Now im freaking out incase I get no symptoms and just faint

Has your control improved lately? 4.3 isn't hypo so I wouldn't worry on that front, a few months ago my control was great in terms of no highs but I wasn't aware til I was in the 1s so I've had to raise my levels abit, I now feel funny in the low 4's

Hi Sarah,

One thing you didn't mention is how long you have had diabetes for? As mentioned I would not worry about the 4.3 (although I would not go to sleep with a 4.3 either). Sometimes when we get really good control like 4-8s our body gets used to those levels (I should really say our brain), and doesn't cause hypo symptoms because it's the 'norm'. Running your sugars a little higher would make it react stronger to the 4.3 when it happened but I personally wouldn't bother at that level. If you had a 3.4 then certainly but not really a problem with a 4+ imo.

Also if you have been diabetic for many years you will eventually loose your hypo symptoms, some specialists think it's due to nerve damage but recent research suggests that it's might also be due to the brain adapting to frequent hypos by increasing it's glycogen storage.

I lost my symptoms after having diabetes 32+ yrs but to date regular checking has been the best way to avoid trouble and seems to work well.

Hypos can change, I used to get a feeling of pins and needles in my lips and tongue which was strange, i've not had that for years. I went through a phase of having no warnings at all, which was horrible. These days I get warnings, i get a feeling that can be confused with hunger, its quite mild as long as I test and eat. I've had the mood swings, drunkeness, dizzyness, confusion etc

Hi,

My daughter who is 11 was diagnosed march this year and had good control until a couple of week ago she started going through the honeymoon period. During her good control few weeks she had quite a few mild hypos 2.6-3.9 then she had 2 very low 1.4 and 1.6 but she felt and looked fine she just felt a little bit hungry. I agree with above that when control is good your brain is used to it and takes longer to signal the low blood sugar. When her blood sugars were higher at first ranging 12-17 she would get symptoms alot earlier.

It sounds like your managing it well though as you recognised that you were starting to feel a little hungry and you were not even at hypo level so were able to eat sooner.

Oh lordy. I'm 20 nd my dr is refusing to test me @_@

Andy, you are insane  Under 6 and I feel horribly nauseous/shaky.

But back to the OP, when I got a reading of 'Lo' after some cider I simply felt weird/intoxicated (though NOT drunk) as opposed to bad and vomiting at 3-4mmol. So there was the symptom of blurred vision/dizziness but at that level the state of mind I was in and lack of puking wasn't making me feel like I needed to act... as if there weren't any/may as well not have been any symptoms at all if that makes sense?

I think a few people may indeed have had some signs at those levels but also you might not notice your brain going fuzzy, so you don't notice the signs and think 'Hang on here, this isn't good. I should do something to fix it'
