Hello!

Is there any evidence that Keto or Low Carb diet dissolve gallstones?
I am only assuming that given high carb diets can actually create gallstones.

Thanks!

I have endeavoured to make this conform to Forum rules. I have no problems if I have missed a rule, and it inadvertently does not conform - am perfectly happy for this to just disappear...

anyhow - here goes -

Hi @Rabdos. Interesting question.

Please know this is not advice. My understanding though, is it's a type of nutritional acid that can start to 'eat away' at gallstones at least, (I wouldn't go as far as to say 'dissolve' but I am no expert), rather than fat and carb content of food. (I leave it to you to have a gander online and weigh up the info in studies yourself.)

But re LCHF and gallstones and gallbladder health - What a high/higher fat content of food does is flush, if you like, your gallbladder more fully with bile, before emptying, and, more often. There is differing lines of opinion on whether that is a good thing or not.

My own experience: I personally had a very good discussion on this with a gallbladder surgeon that I had a consult with at a very reputable hospital on this issue. Ie dealing with a gallstone with higher fat content in one's diet, not less. (I am long term LCHF/Keto since diabetes and gallstone diagnoses.) And, with regular doses of ACV in my diet. And she was very happy for me to give it a try to deal with my one in particular large troublesome gallstone. I was being well monitored, and she had a very good strategy for me for dealing with the possibility of big problems (which can occur, for sure, as in an infected gallbladder).

Because over time I no longer had or have gallstone problems I cannot get another scan on public health in a different country, my own, to see what happened to that large gallstone. But it has ceased to roll over the bile duct trying to get out (which is the cause of that very special pain of a gallstone attack). I don't live in the country with the reputable hospital and specialist attention within three months of referral any longer, alas. (Sigh.) So no monitoring since, and no medical professionals have mentioned since the un-removed gallbladder and state of the large gallstone within, in my home country.

Please note, again - this is merely my experience, and I was being monitored by a specialist gallbladder surgeon at a very reputable research hospital at the time.

I do not know about any scientific evidence. But of experience I know that consuming lupine flour might trigger gallstone passage. I cannot say anything about the amount of lupine flour necessary, but gallstone passage is something you might want to avoid (it is painful).
