Hi, my 9yr old son has had type 1 for the last year. He seems to be coping v well, doing his own injections, tests, understanding how much insulin he needs, when and why. He's very active and is able to eat sweet treats and healthy meals as he did pre-diabetes without affecting his BG. For him diabetes has fitted in with his life rather than changing it negatively. In other words we are managing. I know there will be challenges along the way, but I'd love to hear from other people, especially adults, who can reassure me that Diabetes is a long term manageable condition - there's so many scary stories out there. Thank you.

that's a very positive post.
your son is brilliant! Probably has good support? Not all children do.
Yes T1 is manageable. There are bound to be bad days sometimes [very likely through the teens!], but a child who feels secure will manage best.
Sadly I've just heard of a recent child protection case, where a family of 6 children [none diabetc thankfully!] has been taken into care, because of extreme neglect amounting to cruelty. The eldest child is about the age of your son.
Even with diabetes, your son is better off. He has LOVE. A diabetic child in that family would not have lived!

Thank you, It's reassuring to hear from someone a few years down the line who is living a happy, healthy life with Diabetes. Actually i'vehad some interesting news today - my son Jude is going to have an insulin pump fitted, both him and I feel quite excited!

I've been on four injections daily for 24 years now so don't know anything about the pumps however your diabetes team of specialists know they're stuff so if they suggest the pump go for it good luck with the pump Jude :)
