MODY???? What treatment?

I was diagnosed as Type 2 last December but today have been told I'm being referred to a specialist diabetic team to establish whether I in fact have the MODY type of diabetes (maturity onset diabetes of the young). In short I was diagnosed age 35, not overweight, healthy bmi and have lost weight since and had meds increased a couple of times but can't get my levels to below 9. I've been tested every 3 months.

I'm currently on prolonged released metformin (2 x 2 500mg daily) and have today had 40mg of gliclazide added in - I also take 40mg of simvastin nightly.

If I do have MODY I've been told my treatment is likely to change because what I'm on currently seems to be ineffective.

Is this likely to mean that I'm probably looking at insulin injections as treatment?

Does anyone know how the test for MODY differs from normal blood test for diabetes diagnosis?

MODY is a genetic form of diabetes ie it runs in families so there would be a parent or grandparent with diabetes .
If you have it then it will depend upon the type of MODY as to the treatment.
Some people with MODY take sulphonylureas,(you are already using gliclazide) others insulin. People with MODY are sensitive to insulin and take comparatively small doses.

MODY - It's Not Type 1 and Not Type 2, but Something Else (put that in google and you will find it)

Just to confuse you, there is another condition called LADA . People with LADA may respond to oral drugs for a while but they either don't work well or stop working. LADA is a slower developing form of type 1 and occurs in adults of all ages.

Well done to your doc for refering you to a specialist, it doesn't always seem to happen.

I think I may have the MODY type by the sounds of it.

Going to have my 3 month test at the end of this month. Then hopefully get to see a specialist. I've got like a hundred questions for whoever that is!

Thanks. I have an appt through to see the specialist in just over two weeks time. It will just be good to get my diabetes under control, whichever type I have. Hopefully that appt will bring me one step closer.
