Hi

I am in my late fifties, moving to UK from Canada and expect with continued good health stability and good hope to be working soon.

My health premiums/tax have been paid for my expected 5 year stay on an ancestry visa which lets me work and it will be lovely to spend some time with my daughter who married a UK guy.

I would like to have a doctor as quickly as possible. Where I live presently in Ontario (family doctor shortages), it is a easier to get a doctor when you join a health care team, instead of seeking out a personal doctor. It is a good way that has been developed here within the past years dealing with our doctor shortages.

is that how it works in England (Liverpool)? How do get a family doctor/General Practitioner when you arrive in a new town?

Thank you for your replies.

Just go to your local surgery or one of your choice and register. The only thing that worried them when I registered was how far away from the surgery I lived. If called out they like you to be local.

It is not a good bargaining chip for the medical profession to say that they have enough doctors or that they are paid enough but there isn't a shortage that will affect your registration.

Yes it's usual to register with the GP surgery nearest to where you are living. You just need to go along with ID (passport) and proof of address. You might have to make an appointment for an initial check up.
Most GP surgeries will have more than one GP working there. You will be registered to one, but you don't necessarily just have to see the one you are registered with. You can see any GP at that practice.
One GP in a GP surgery is supposed to be the diabetes 'specialist'. But I don't think much of the diabetes specialist at my GP surgery and always see another.

I live in a small village with a GP surgery. There are 6 GPs and several.nurses. it covers the nearby villages as well. Although I'm officially on one Dr's list I can see any Dr or nurse I want to. Most surgeries have a catchment area so you have to live within a certain distance but in a city you'll have a choice of surgeries.
Good luck with your move and welcome to the UK

If you are moving close to Southport then maybe our own Dr David Unwin would take you on...
