Diagnosed T2 approximately five weeks ago...started middle of June with a very severe cellulitis infection...followed by...DVT...High Blood Pressure...Diabetes...and recently an endometrial biopsy (still waiting for results).

Taking Metformin 500 mg twice a day ( among other meds) which has almost demolished my appetite and left me with little interest in food.

Now at the point where I am struggling to process all the information relating to my diabetes and the other health issues I have.

Welcome to the forum @Bubbsie - I was diagnosed earlier in the year so I remember going through what you are, just know it does get better. Everything was a mystery to me - now I feel like I've got a pretty good understanding of diabetes, a lot of it from this forum!

I will tag @daisy1 who can provide you with some information to help you get started.

I learnt so much in the first few weeks by reading the forums (ok non stop reading the forums!), many folks are super helpful on here - there are no silly questions.

Best of luck, and remember you are not alone :)

@Bubbsie

Hello and welcome to the forum :) I t's a shock at first and there is a lot to learn but it will all become clear to you. Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it helpful.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 220,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

You may also be interested to read questions to ask at a diabetic clinic.

Hi bubbsie, dropped by to say hello, I was diagnosed in July so relate to what your saying, lots of great info on here. I have read what type2 is a hundred times but still struggle to answer when asked what it is, that's how new and muddled I feel !!! Once I got hold of a metre I felt so much more in control. I also got a blood pressure monitor and a good set of bathroom scales and keep track of all my readings, sounds a bit obsessive but its really good to see the numbers coming down.
Good luck with your test results.

Hi. Metformin started life as an appetite suppressant so can reduce it or leave you with a strange metallic taste. This will fade so continue with it if you can.

@Bubbsie - Hello and Welcome. Just take one day at a time, as a suggestion - why not write down any information in a note book.
Do you have a blood glucose meter? This is the most important piece of your Diabetic equipment.:)

I am just as muddled ... even eight months after diagnosis! Just cannot get my head around any of it. My doctor refused a meter and I'm too confused to send for one in case I donn't get THAT right either :( Putting weight back on too sadly

@coby - Hello :). Few people get issued these days with meters. But, you really ought to think about purchasing a Meter. Using a Meter allows you to see/find out what foods you can eat and those to avoid. I have the link for the Codefree Meter which is popular on this forum. Perhaps you can tell me a bit more about what it is you don't understand. Are you just diet controlled? Or do you take tablets for your Diabetes?

I take Metformin tablets ... 500mg ... two per day.
It would be far easier to tell you what I DO understand than what I don't, as nothing goes in with me :( I fall asleep 20 mins after lunch and dinner EVERY day ... tried to fight it but my eyes just won't stay open. Explained that to my doctor but she still refused me a meter.

I understand that I have diabetes now, though heaven knows how, since I meet none of the criteria and there's none in my family line. I know my blood is too sweet but don't know how to unsweeten it. I know it's meant to make you thirsty and to make your vision foggy but it doesn't with me. My diagnosis came about because my vision suddenly became perfect!!! Weird!

@coby - So you understand you have Diabetes, and you have to accept it, because it is not going to go away. So, you have to get it under control. I see you take Metformin 500mg twice daily, and do you take these with your food? You really ought to invest in a Blood Glucose Meter - this is a vital piece of a Diabetics equipment.
Stop drinking anything sweet, use artificial sweeteners in Tea and Coffee, and drink more water. Exercise and Diet is essential for getting blood sugars down and losing weight. There are threads on the Forum that have all kinds of diets, and threads that members post each day what foods they have eaten. Read around the different threads and ask questions if you don't understand, you will get answers from other members. And you could write things down in a notebook, and refer to your notes whenever. A lot of members follow the LCHF Diet and here is a link for you to have a read: http://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/60-seconds

Diet is essential - and exercise is certainly very helpful and best practice, but it is not necessarily essential. If you only have the time/energy/mental bandwidth to focus on one, focus on what you eat.

I have not done any significant exercise since diagnosis, and my BG has been within the normal (not diabetic-normal, non-diabetic normal - in 11 months, I can still probably count on 2 hands the number of times I've been over 7,8 since 3 days after diagnosis. (Without looking back at my log, I can't be absolutely certain, but I'm very close to a dozen total out of the norm readings.) I test any unfamiliar food at 1 hour post eating, 2 hours post eating and - often - 3 hours post eating, so I'm not just ignoring the spikes to claim that kind of control..
