Hi Mike, my breakfast is just one slice of whole meal bread. No i don't take bananas after I found out it has high sugar in it. I usually eat blue berries or apples.

Seems like your lunch is alot more variety than mine. Mine is just vegetables and some fish or chicken meat. That's all.

My snacks will be some nuts. Tried plain yoghurt but the taste is horrible.

Her numbers are within the 2 hour range.
Yes Michael but what ARE those numbers?

Some can tolerate apples, many cannot. Substitute and meter test on something different if you can. Thank heavens you don't do bananas

Wholemeal bread ain't what it's cracked up to be either ... don't tell me that's ALL you have? Again, rethink it (and test) but a good quick fry up of full meat sausages, bacon, eggs and spinach (combination thereof) will do you well

Her numbers are below 7 after 2 hours.

Yes that's all I have for breakfast.
I don't think the place I live in has full meat sausage. It is all processed sausage.

What is your numbers after the sumptuous breakfast?

Hello Michael and welcome to the forum :)

You have already had lots of advice from members, now, here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 130,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

Well you don't need the sausage ... just the bacon will do.

When did you get that 8.6? One slice of bread? Doesn't sound enough for me, buy hey, some can deal with it :)

My readings are less than 1.5 mmol after 2 hours. Mostly in the 6s

I get that once during dinner when I was having some cookies together with the dinner.

One slice was definitely not enough for me but I don't know what else to eat for breakfast. Does bacon have carbs?

Your numbers are good.

There was a time they were not but I worked eight days a week (sheesh, but weren't the Beatles clever:)) to change that. Damned if I'll let this get to me and if I had to change what I ate, so be it. Then again, I hardly ever ate rubbish. Losing weight (not that that was a major problem either) was no big deal. Everything in balance as they say.

Bacon has close enough to zero carbs The eggs are a GREAT source of protein ..... plenty of butter, fry it up and enjoy !! Any good stir fry leftovers from the night before are also good. Throw in some mushrooms, some onions and you're good to go. This is a LCHF suggestion so again, test before and after

BTW, what do you drink?

Hello and welcome Michael! You are in the best place for great, tried and tested advice, along with lovely support! You have some great advice from the guys already. I went low carb higher fat within two days of diagnosis late last June and can honestly say that I don't crave, I have so much more energy without carbs- i chose to set myself a max of 30gm per day, mostly used on berries, the odd seeded crispbread, haven't had grains, bread, pasta or starchy veg since starting.
We all different, but in just 18 weeks I reduced my hba1c from 61 to a non - diabetic level of 38 so it works for me! I've also lost over 5 stone - and it hasn't even felt like a "diet"
Keep posting and asking, we don't bite!

You ARE taking this head on aren't you :) Coffee with full cream milk (look up "bullet proof" coffee if you dare) should be OK as should some teas. Milk might be fine as well, but again test as others react and others do not. Fizzy drinks ..... dumped ? Good.

Me? Water, maybe an odd decaf with thick cream (no sugar) and some dry red wine.

Well done with your questions. Keep goin' :)

Yes fizzy drinks dumped. Maybe I could try some cocoa powder for hot chocolate
The hot chocolate made with cocoa is lush, so much nicer than the sugar filled brands! 1 teaspoon pure cocoa, 2 teaspoons canderel, mix with boiling water, add double cream- and enjoy!!

Thanks everyone, I am still trying very hard to stop the crave for carbs and sweet stuff. It is
Quite upset when you can't eat them anymore.
I totally understand that. Ive actually been quite depressed about not ever having my beloved cake, chocolate, biscuits and pastries again. BUT i ignored my diagnosis for four years, and in that time i comfort ate all i wanted, was driven crazy by the carb cravings, eating was all I thought about. Until i began to feel ill. My feet hurt, my knees hurt, I was constantly exhausted and had to take naps during the day, constantly cold and my hair began falling out. Searching my symptoms online is how I doubt this forum and discovered low carb high fat eating plan. And I can honestly say ive never eaten as much or as regularly in my life. Im not going to lie, the first few days low carbing nearly drove me insane but i stuck at it, I never feel hungry and my cravings are all but gone. If I have a moment of weakness I have a very sweet (sweetener) creamy coffee and that does the trick. Oh and in 10 days I have lost 1stone 4 pounds. I got weighed this morning and cried tears of joy. :) it's hard to start with but its worth doing and sticking at and you learn lots about what food can do to you!
Good luck on your diabetes journey and remember if you're unsure about anything just ask here, the fantastic people here have helped me no end!! ☺️

I have and always have had a sweet tooth, so for me going cold turkey wasn't an option, I last so long then binge, it was always the same when I tried dieting even before being diagnosed and accepting my diabetes. I have now accepted that it is something that I will have to live with for the rest of my life so I have had to look at ways to compramise and make it possible.

Testing for me has been the answer, try something and test, if the reading peaks too high try a smaller portion or an alternative and test again, find out what your limits are and stick to them.

If you like cakes and biscuits take a look at the recipes on this site there are alternatives but you will probably have to learn to cook them yourself. The recipes might also help you find options for you to eat for your meals that you wouldn't have thought about yourself.

Also remember we all fall off the wagon from time to time, if it happens don't beat yourself up over it, just look at the next meal as a chance to start again.
